Been watching this while I've been stuck back at home because of the coronavirus situation. Has been on my radar for ages and I've heard over and over again that I'll love the film.
On Ep. 11 right now - pretty good so far. I like the way it's framed around anxieties, trauma, and estranged relationships, though some of the more generic 90s anime moments have fallen flat for me. Assuming all of this will be explored more interestingly/beautifully/abstractly in the film. Seems to be leading up to some pretty emotional stuff.
Any fans of this 1?

I hate it. So you'll probably love it. I've tried to erase the show from my mind, but:
There is some good stuff in there, but it never comes together to pull its themes into a cohesive whole. It's all about trauma and sexual anxiety and parents being dicks as you say, but the story is always a generic "traumatized teens battle giant monsters" show and the plot never links any of the ideas together in an interesting way. And the "generic 90s anime moments" are insulting. The whole thing becomes so perverted that it leaves me uncomfortable.
And hell, it just layers on the whole depressed teen shtick way too thick.
And just wait for that ending, which is possibly the most insulting in television history.
Haven't seen the movies, but... yeeeeah. I'm the resident anime fan of this board (Urbanpatrician could also have this title), but this is the one critically acclaimed anime "I don't get." Well, I don't get a lot of others too, come to think of it. But those are pretty obviously trash only loved by weirdos, whereas Evangelion is trash loved by weirdos that is gilded in gold.

I think it's more general existential anxiety than depression. From what I'm gathering so far, it's aiming at an uplifting conclusion (hedgehog dilemma is leaving a piece out - you also need to get close to someone to really love them, so it's really OK to experience pain, it's required to love, etc.) It's definitely pretty disturbing though. COUNT ME AS A WEIRDO SO FAR THEN

COUNT ME AS A WEIRDO SO FAR THEN I genuinely like the monster designs, and the side characters that aren't angsty teens wrestling with existential dread and/or sudden nudity are actually pretty cool. Although there is that scene in which it is implied that Misako fucks a penguin. Yes, really. That isn't a pleasant memory. But the "Judeo-Christian word salad" as I heard it described once is certainly annoying (why have "symbolism" if the symbolism doesn't mean anything). The rapeyness played for laughs is troubling. And all of the damned moping is infuriating. If ever there was a show in which I actively wanted to murder the protagonists in brutal, painful ways, it is this one. At least then we'd be dealing with Shinji's dad who emotionally tortures kids for kicks and that child molester guy and Misako who is even more of a child molester and the blond woman who actually isn't so bad IIRC. Those are characters that I don't actively want to bludgeon. As for the ending... well, even Anno thought it was crap, if I heard right. I do know that the movies *do not* use that ending and diverges from the show greatly at around the halfway point of the show.

The show was flawed but honestly pretty great overall, and it set up the film beautifully, which was genuinely the most profound and brilliant meditation on fear revolving around the human condition I've ever seen.
Martin - Misato does not fuck a penguin at any point, I have no idea what gave you that impression. She was an awful guardian for Shinji, but she does not fuck a penguin, lol.
I found the symbolism very meaningful - the color contrasts and open/closed fists and the whole Rei/Lillith/Yui (collectivism/Mother) vs Asuka (individuality/Significant Other) thing in Shinji's perception was utterly genius.
Tho if you haven't seen the film there's not much I can say about it - a million times better than the show though IMO...you may not agree

That image came from the second Evangelion movie (which I haven't watched), and the image got stuck in my head. It does exist though. I'm looking at it. God help me.
