I would also agree that it is not possible to love Phantom Thread too much. In terms of only English Language, I had to knock out Carmen Machi in The Bar from my Supporting Actress as she's my real 5th spot.
1 Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread (His finest work) 2 James Franco, The Disaster Artist 3 Harry Dean Stanton, Lucky 4 Joaquin Phoenix, You Were Never Really Here 5 James McAvoy, Split
1 Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri 2 Vicky Krieps, Phantom Thread 3 Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird 4 Meryl Streep, The Post (Her best in a long, long time) 5 Noomi Rapace, What Happened to Monday
1 Barry Keoghan, The Killing of a Sacred Deer (Not even a Goodfella could look that sinister eating spaghetti) 2 Garrett Hedlund, Mudbound 3 Michael Stuhlbarg, Call Me by Your Name 4 Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri 5 Will Poulter, Detroit
1 Lesley Manville, Phantom Thread 2 Betty Gabriel, Get Out 3 Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water (Best of her nominated trio) 4 Michelle Pfeiffer, Mother! 5 Nicole Kidman,The Killing of a Sacred Deer

Haven't watched Detroit, Maudie and Wonder Wheel yet...
Keoghan was good and menacing in Sacred Deer. Pattinson was having a good time. Bening is never bad.
Phoenix is in my 2018 list.
Guys no love for Marjorie Prime? Melissa Leo in Novitiate? These two performances are my real favorites.
It's nice to see other Russell Beale fans. Haley Lu Richardson was very nuanced in Columbus in my opinion.

And I truly believe, its a great crime to combine all performances of a single year within 5-6 nominations. In my perfect world, english language film award categories and foreign language film award categories are completely separate. The whole process is very tiring, and we need to see loads of films (especially foreign) but it becomes more interesting as well. Just wait, after this poll- I will be asking you about your foreign-language acting lineups...

and btw I am not sure where to post it, or even if it is wise to even post it , but I am in full-fledged manic phase so lets leap.
I have just joined this forum, and I really liked the concept, and I liked some of your choices even more (for example Haley Lu Richardson and Simon Russell Beale) and thats why I am taking the liberty to share some ideas of mine.
I have been to forums and wordpress forums before where they play the award game. I think, We play these games mainly because of our disappointment of the oscars and other awards, apart from our own listomania and narcissisms, lol. But the process we choose is so very like the oscars ! We see movies arbitrarily, there are FYC posts of course, but even they miss some of the best movies/performances because many of us dont get the time !!! For example, Melissa Leo and HLR performances are so underseen in 2017. To be more acute in our choices, I do think we need to adopt some more measures.
Here is what I think-
1. A specific timeline should be given for interested members to cover a year. (1-3 week) 2. Then campaigning season begins. Each member puts forth their FYC s and another 7 days are spent watching selected FYCS. 3. Nomination ballots- Generally its 5 points for your number 1 choice, 4 for the next etc. What if we are to grade the performances ourselves out of 5 or 10? The benefit will be-even only 1 person gives an obscure performance 5 out 5, while 10 other member gives a celebrated performance 2 on average, it would be the obscure performance who will land the nomination. However, sometimes we have very eccentric choices, so in order to be nominated, a film or performance must be mentioned at least 2/3 times.
4.after nominations, another 1 week to submit the final ballots.
A year is covered in a month. Tiring? Yes. Boring? I think not. And just imagine how many gems you will discover along the way.
I discovered films like Arrebato and performances like Rafaela Aparicio's mama only in this way.
I am very new over here, and I am not a very prominent cinephile. If any of you people who are more ripe in experience start this it would be better. Dont forget to invite me, lol.
And I know most ppl (maybe no-one) will like this too-perfect idea. Just dont start hating me, lolz.
