I'm not the biggest Bowie fan tbh but this song, video, the entire presentation is a testament to a kind of deranged genius. First the song, a "sequel" improves on the original and darkens it. Then the video - one of the earliest - evokes memory and life stages and Christ imagery (as in being/needing a savior) and Bergman even.
But where this gets really great is in how it depicts Bowie as a star (in a photo and as the starman), a lost, addicted child (in the room), a mocked creator of mere product leading to nowhere as the mime - silent, powerless, in front of a bulldozer that will crush him.
It is one of the saddest visual depictions of an artist I've ever seen - and as the mime, escorted by his "mother", voiceless, sad and walking endlessly it kind of breaks your heart.

Bjork - "Hyperballad"
The Chemical Brothers - "Let Forever Be"

Young people since around 2005 onward do not get Rock and Roll (at all), hence we get Vampire Weekend etc. (um) - but this video by The Libertines the most self-aware band since maybe The Clash and the most drug abusing band since maybe The Heartbreakers indicts those people and themselves.
Combining their many scandals with A Clockwork Orange "for your entertainment", the band here literally kills themselves for us - while some look on in horror and some sexualize it - being self aware, they also realize the absurdity of their own situation (they lived) and they get by............. with a crooked/wicked little smile and so will you too, right?

The Replacements made a very famous video - for Bastards of Young - just a speaker and foot kicking in that speaker. It flopped then (naturally) and now is often copied and celebrated (naturally). But The Ledge, is the video I loved, audience unfriendly and batsh it funny. At first, there is no clear shot of the band at all only of their sandwiches, noses, eyes, hands, cigarettes, shoes! At almost 2 minutes in they start to appear - bored, disinterested - the first shot of "the band" is, tellingly of 4 empty chairs.
They later used this exact same video for the song Alex Chilton. Fantastic example of their marketing knowledge and career instincts, that.

Happy 41st, Pete. Here he is shoplifting the band's own single.

LL Cool J - Going Back To CaliThis video set everything against each other and then got back what some would say it deserved. White against Black first - look at the line he's in the back of for a start . East Coast vs. West Coast (fnck Cali) and even the beat which is defiantly old school vs. new school - horns! ........and the girls that dig him at the counter are all white too. Less than 2 years later Sonic Youth's Kool Thing parodied it brilliantly with Kim Gordon - the original Kurt Cobain - eviscerating it not as Rock vs. Rap or Black vs. White or East Coast vs. West Coast but on sexist grounds with Chuck D playing the uncool (here at least) Cool J part in a great cameo.

My favourite topic in music Here's 10 off the top of the head and I'm sure I'll do another 10 soon. It's also no coincidence that 4 of these are the work of Chris Cunningham, one of my favourite directors of all time, and that's purely based off of music video work. Smashing Pumpkins, Tonight, TonightAphex Twin, Windowlicker
Bjork, All is Full of LovePortishead, Only YouThe Chemical Brothers, The TestMadonna, Bedtime StoriesRadiohead, JustMissy Elliot, She's A BitchSquarepusher, Come On My SelectorRed Hot Chili Peppers, Warped

Blondie and their best song Dreaming is the best performance video ever because of Debbie Harry's unbelievable - in every way - performance.
She never looked better or more appealing, and less trying to - despite wearing a ton of makeup and the camera in extreme close-up (hmmmmmmm)........is utterly not "acting" sexy or cool here she just IS insanely sexy and cool............ she hits herself in the head with her hand as a cute mockery of the song she's singing (stop dreaming! 2:34), makes a kid-like comic face at the "stop and stare at me" part, is wearing a dress that looks like it may fall off at any second - on a body that looks like she doesn't even know a guy named Jim much less ever went to a fnckin' Gym and she doesn't need to anyway.
She'll have a cup of tea...

The Beatles uploaded a bunch of their old promotional clips on Youtube a couple years ago and they're really great to look at, particularly the ones from their psychedelic period. For my money the Strawberry Fields clip may be the best music video of all time. Deliberate continuity errors and abrupt change in the time of day make it a visual representation of the postmodern "nothing is real" refrain. Saw a clip of when it debuted on Dick Clark and the studio audience looks shellshocked afterward, likely both from the song itself and the clip. Then there's the one for Blue Jay Way which is one of the weirdest things I've ever seen and feels proto-Lynchian The A Day in the Life clip films the "party" that took place during the song's recording with various British rock luminaries in attendance in a surreal style along the lines of the other two videos. It goes to show what an event that song was at the time, I don't think there'd been anything on such a grand scale in popular music prior to that. Hard to imagine anything like that happening today.

Pulp RazzmatazzI wish I wrote this song ....I wish I could sing it.......I'd like to act it out in the video ...... "I was lying when I asked you to stay.........you started getting fatter - 3 weeks after I left you ..." - I love everything about this song and everything Jarvis Cocker does in this video - how he acts out the "am I talking too fast, if you want I could write it down" line......
