Lubezki's work for Malick is soooooo try-hard and self-centered. It's like the camera is constantly yelling at the viewer: "LOOK! THIS IS PROFOUND" don't hate, that gif from ToL made me

Lubezki shot my favorite film of all time so he wins by default.

Genuinely depends on what you value in cinematography. If you prize gorgeously framed shots, Deakins is your man. If you prefer ballet-like camera movement that galvanizes the film, Chivo's unparalleled. Both are kings at what they excel at.

Deakins for his greater versatility (not to shortchange Lubezki's astounding work on The Cat in the Hat) and I think his highs (Jesse James, No Country for Old Men, Skyfall) are a little higher.

Lubezki takes you out of the story sometimes. Deakins is the opposite of that. I prefer Deakins

Voted for Deakins so that both are regarded at same level. But Chivo should be better regarded, films shot by him feel his, unlike Deakins. I used to think that The Master was shot by Deakins until I learnt that it wasn't But Deakins is the best of his style. Chivo is by default the best of his style since he doesn't really have competition, which doesn't really do justice to his talents. I could've voted for either.

Can't imagine if Kubrick is still alive today, He would've used Deakins for his monumental Crime film and Chivo for his Grand Outer Space project. Both are kings, No Country and Tree of Life are heavenly works equivalent to Kubrick's Clockwork Orange and 2001 for me.

Lubezki may have won three in a row and appear overrated to some, but he was also snubbed for Children of Men, The Tree of Life and The New World amongst others...I think he is definitely the best in the game. Oh, and he deserved his wins in 2014 and 2016.

The two Greatest of All Time, but I think Chivo may have officially passed Deakins in my book.

Lubezki, although the shot you posted for Deakins is up there with my favourite ever, and he is a master of his craft just like Lubezki.

It's so close, but I'll say Deakins.
