This man played Jesus and Satan with equal success. Has there ever been an actor capable of such dizzying, dazzling range?

Should actually be even more revered than he is - I would stack his high points on screen up against any living rival among the great film actors and feel he might come out on top. Had the misfortune of delivering many if not most of his finest performances (aside from Pelle the Conqueror and the Bergmans) in films that slipped under the culture's radar and/or received limited distribution outside of Sweden and have been severely underseen:
Specifically - John Huston's The Kremlin Letter (1970), Laszlo Benedek's The Night Visitor (1971), John Power's Father (1990), Bille August's The Best Intentions (1991), Krzysztof Zanussi's The Silent Touch (1992), Liv Ullmann's Private Confessions (1996), and above all his four extraordinary collaborations with Jan Troell: The Emigrants (1971), The New Land (1972), The Flight of the Eagle (1982), and his towering portrayal of Knut Hamsun in Hamsun (1996).
I hope people seek out that last one in particular because it qualifies as not only von Sydow's best work, but perhaps the strongest performance put on film by anyone during the 90s. He will be missed.

He was (and is) my favorite actor. A legend in his own time, with a lived-in face, a voice, and a presence of mythological proportions, maybe the most lyrical of film actors in his (deceiving) simplicity. Like Cranly said, he was much more than his great Bergman films... his most amazing work was for that other Swedish film poet, Jan Troell.
Someone called him the face of 20th century Man in movies... I think that's about right.
The love for him here warms the heart. Love you, Max.

I came home from work to this news and I'm gutted. Obviously 90 is nothing to scoff at and we have an amazing career to look back on and appreciate. Such an immensely talented person with so much presence, one of the greats.

Just finished watching "The Seventh Seal" on the big screen as part of an impromptu in memoriam screening. Happy to honor this great legend that way. Pissed the Academy didn't give him an honorary Oscar in time.

One of the greatest actors of all time. The Seventh Seal is a GOAT tier performance and he has too many other very good performances to even try to mention all of them. Both his English and European careers would be great just on their own.
Looked and did not see a statement from Liv Ullmann yet, who is generally pretty private. I know she is probably very sad. The two of them are one of those pairs of actors where when you think of one you think of the other right away.

It's a shame that this Youtube video is out of sync with the sound, as it's a spectacular showcase of what Max von Sydow could do if you left camera on him and just let him control a room. I've been thinking about this movie a lot lately (it's one of the unsung classics of the 90s, and the novel is even better), and got the hankering to watch the man's heartbreaking work in this scene. Out of all the "cries for justice" we see in courtroom movies, none of them have the power of this one.

Farewell to a true titan in the world of film. 😥😥😥😥 LOVED me some Max Von Sydow. One of my favorite actors. Also, one of the most incredible careers of any film actor ever IMO. Rest peacefully, great one.
