Not only a monumental screen presence but he had a lot of quirky things to him also. The longest consistently working actor I can think of - maybe not ever but maybe that too even - currently only Trintignant even approached him afaik and he was far less visible on screen with career gaps. He also had one of the great acting one, two punches within a single year - Shame and Hour of the Wolf (1968). Like George C. Scott he also never, ever appeared to look young to me - like he's 44 in The Exorcist even and 13 years earlier in The Virgin Spring (yet another great turn) he looked around 44 to me. RIP

No!! Such an amazing actor. So many great, great performances over more than five decades. He is one the guys, who I think of, that is a true acting great, but hardly known by the general public.
Requiescat in pace.

RIP to a brilliant actor, and someone it is fully justifiable to describe as a legend in his field.

Oh my God, damn Noooooooo 😭😭😭, he never won Oscar!, now you regret academy!... Goodbye Father Merrin, shocking news! I know he's a legend and doesn't need the honorary Oscar to be remembered or anything, but I'm so mad that they never gave it to him despite having plenty of chances!!!

I'm honestly surprised he was never nominated or won for an Bergman film, considering how much the academy responded well to his films, even with the Foreign language barrier. Sydow's nomination for Pelle The Conquerer is one of their more inspiring noms, too.

RIP, and cheers to one of the greatest presences in cinema history, and I mean 'greatest' in all its meanings. He often seemed larger than life and rarely has any director searched the landscape of an actor's face quite like Bergman with Sydow.... instantly thinking of the ending shot of Shame....

To me he is royalty. What an absolute fucking titan for seven fucking decades on screen. Who goes unbeaten at chess for that long? Fuck you, Death. It doesn't even count at this point. All those performances, all those movies, all those directors he blessed and saved and made. Literal legend.

Star of the film that impacted me so strongly at a young age that I still am so into the medium to this day. Man. “No exceptions”. Rest In Peace.
