I don’t know if anyone other actor has had such an up and down career with the kind of lows and highs he’s had, especially with his level of fame. While I think he’s a limited actor he’s certainly capable of some very good performances. I think he is very self aware and leans into it which helps him. His 2000 to 2005 is so brutal but his supporting role in Hollywoodland really helped him turn things around. I think he was pitch perfect in Gone Girl and was pretty good in The Company Men, The Town, and Triple Frontier. I’m really looking forward to The Way Back and have been happy to hear all the positive buzz.
On a side note, I’d like to see him be a little more picking about casting himself in the lead when he directs. He was miscast in Live by Night which hurt it a bit.

He is OK. I remember the days when he was like the most hated actor on internet which was unfair. He turned the tables around with his directorial efforts; I enjoyed them all except for the last one. I agree that he's limited, but when he gets the right part - he can be very effective. I'd like to mention one of my favorite performances by him: "Boiler Room". He gets sort of Alec Baldwin in Glengarry type of role, small part but he certainls leaves an impression and it's a proof that when he gets the part that fits him well, he can be very memorable. I like what he does in "Gone Girl", "Hollywoodland" and "Chasing Amy". As for "The Way Back", it doesn't sound like my kind of film but I'm intrigued because of all the praise for his performance.

He's a very very limited actor imo. One of the less talented big movie stars of his generation.
As a director though, things change. He has done some pretty good films and deserved the acclaim he got.

As an actor? I really don't care for him. He has one fine performance in Hollywoodland and is okay in a few other films like The Town.
As a director? Love him. Argo is my Best Picture winner in 2012 and one of the few 10/10s of the decade, The Town is in my Top 5 of 2010 and Gone Baby Gone is a great film as well. Live by Night was a step down, but is still solid. Can't wait for his next film.

Solid director but not a very good actor. I've found him decent like two or three times (Good Will Hunting, Argo, I guess Gone Girl but it's frustrating to think of what a better actor could have done with that part) and not good outside of that.

I really can't help but like the guy. He's a much better actor than he is given credit for, a legitimately great director, and I find him a refreshing presence in the media circuit because of his self-awareness and honesty about his struggles.
I also find myself often being pretty defensive of celebrities who have obviously struggled through real issues, especially when those issues were heavy tabloid fodder given that is absolutely the worst circumstance imaginable to facilitate any kind of progress. Anybody willing to undergo the self-reflection and process necessary to come out clean on the other side of that in such an environment is someone I will gladly root for.

I mean he did a good job, but I feel like an even stronger actor would have made it even better. I did enjoy it, but there were also times where his expressions looked like those memes of him out there especially the one where he's smoking and the one where he's making a dumb face because of one of the DC movies that he did. So that made it strange.

I guess off the top of my head, his brother even though I don’t like his brother, because parts of it reminded me of Manchester by the Sea. Or even Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Gosling, or Adam Driver since their relationship movies were all compared to each other at various points last year.

They all would have obviously brought something to the roles but I don’t know that any of them would have been any more convincing as an Everyman that has been put through the ringer. Also not sure if I buy them all as former basketball stars. Maybe Driver, but I think he would have taken me out of the movie.

IMO , he's an okay actor and a good to great director. His biggest misfire was accepting the role of Batman . Should have never taken on that role. but damn I can't deny that he is a good to great director. I love Gone Baby Gone and The Town.

I always liked him. In the media, he was always seen as second to goody two shoe Damon, but after the Effie Brown incident, people changed their tune towards Affleck lol. I feel sorry for his problems being played out in the media. Like someone else mentioned, at least he's honest about his issues. He's a good actor and better director.

He's basically the poster child for Hollywood idiocy after his embarrassing display on the Bill Maher show.
As an actor, he's okay, nothing special, and as a director he's better than okay, nothing special, and I guess that's about it.
