Not a exceptionally great start for Onward. Hopefully it has good Friday day matinee showings, because otherwise it's looking to be Pixar's lowest opening weekend since The Good Dinosaur.

Meh at Onward. That's a really weak opening given its supposed budget, but it's also on par with tracking. On the plus side that's a pretty good drop for The Invisible Man, and Emma looks to be a sleeper hit for Focus. www.the-numbers.com/daily-box-office-chart1 N Onward Walt Disney $12,100,000 4,310 $2,807 $12,100,000 1 2 (1) The Invisible Man Universal $4,310,000 +138% -57% 3,610 $1,194 $38,328,152 8 3 N The Way Back Warner Bros. $2,600,000 2,718 $957 $2,600,000 1 4 (2) The Call of the Wild 20th Century… $1,839,000 +117% -46% 3,914 $470 $52,322,738 15 5 (3) Sonic The Hedgehog Paramount Pi… $1,775,000 +119% -49% 3,717 $478 $134,593,152 22 6 (14) Emma Focus Features $1,670,000 +1,666% +377% 1,565 $1,067 $3,562,065 15 7 (4) Bad Boys For Life Sony Pictures $785,000 +130% -29% 2,159 $364 $199,763,103 50 8 (5) Birds of Prey (And the Fa… Warner Bros. $560,000 +73% -48% 2,173 $258 $80,960,582 29 - (7) 1917 Universal $360,000 +59% -49% 1,535 $235 $157,284,094 73 - (10) Jumanji: The Next Level Sony Pictures $325,000 +105% -35% 1,403 $232 $314,856,594 85

Hopefully Onward has some good legs, because otherwise it's probably going to lose Disney a lot of money, since the overseas gross isn't looking good. At least The Invisible Man dropped less then 50%, which is an extremely solid hold. Also Bad Boys For Life passed 200m. www.the-numbers.com/weekend-box-office-chart1 N Onward Walt Disney $40,000,000 4,310 $9,281 $40,000,000 1 2 (1) The Invisible Man Universal $15,150,000 -46% 3,610 n/c $4,197 $52,693,570 2 3 N The Way Back Warner Bros. $8,500,000 2,718 $3,127 $8,500,000 1 4 (2) Sonic The Hedgehog Paramount… $7,999,848 -51% 3,717 -460 $2,152 $140,818,000 4 5 (3) The Call of the Wild 20th Cent… $7,000,000 -48% 3,914 +49 $1,788 $57,483,738 3 6 (13) Emma Focus Fea… $5,000,000 +331% 1,565 +1,468 $3,195 $6,892,065 3 7 (5) Bad Boys For Life Sony Pict… $3,050,000 -30% 2,159 -549 $1,413 $202,028,103 8 8 (6) Birds of Prey (And th… Warner Bros. $2,160,000 -47% 2,173 -951 $994 $82,560,582 5 - (8) 1917 Universal $1,370,000 -49% 1,535 -697 $893 $158,294,094 11 - (11) Jumanji: The Next Level Sony Pict… $1,340,000 -39% 1,403 -408 $955 $315,871,594 13

So happy for Emma, it’s the type of film that will appeal to a lot of people who not just love Jane Austen’s work, but simply seeking lighthearted, breezy entertainment. Did you see it yet? 🙂 Jumanji’s unprecedented success is purely down to the brilliant business minds behind this reboot and have propelled a B-level property into a mammoth A-level box office triumph. It wasn’t a complete rehash of the original, but rather a continuation of the zany, immensely fun narrative that incorporated fresh new twists and ideas that appealed to audiences not even familiar with the series. Very impressive stuff from Sony.

Very impressive stuff from Sony. Jumanji 2 also benefited tremendously from the fantastic chemistry of its cast (Johnson, Hart, Black, Gillan), that helped make it an incredibly entertaining time for moviegoers. That same sort of chemistry still manages to carry over into The Next Level, even with the potential for the film to repeat itself.

Yes.I saw it a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was really lovely, beautifully shot and acted. It's nice to see it doing so well, period films often struggle at the box office.

Well-deserved. Wouldn't surprise me if it well beyond 200m worldwide. Go Leigh Whannell.
