2020 - "Parasite" - NS 2019 - "Green Book" - NS 2018 - "The Shape of Water" - 6 2017 - "Moonlight" - 7 2016 - "Spotlight" - NS 2015 - "Birdman" - NS 2014 - "12 Years a Slave" - NS 2013 - "Argo" - NS 2012 - "The Artist" - NS 2011 - "The King's Speech" - 6 2010 - "The Hurt Locker" - 7 2009 - "Slumdog Millionaire" - 7 (Would be better if we had a better lead than Freida Pinto. A girl with more longing and deep eyes would elevate this to at least a film with a memorable lead in the Bollywood style) 2008 - "No Country for Old Men" - 8 2007 - "The Departed" - 6 2006 - "Crash" - 6 2005 - "Million Dollar Baby" - 5 2004 - "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" - 9 2003 - "Chicago" - 7 2002 - "A Beautiful Mind" - 7.5 2001 - "Gladiator" - 7 2000 - "American Beauty" - 7.5 1999 - "Shakespeare in Love" - 5 (worst than I thought upon a rewatch. Such fluff.) 1998 - "Titanic" - 8 1997 - "The English Patient" - 7 1996 - "Braveheart" - 6 1995 - "Forrest Gump" - 8 1994 - "Schindler’s List" - 7.5 1993 - "Unforgiven" - 9 1992 - "The Silence of the Lambs" - 6 1991 - "Dances With Wolves" - 6 1990 - "Driving Miss Daisy" - 6 1989 - "Rain Man" - 6 1988 - "The Last Emperor" - 7.5 1987 - "Platoon" - 8 1986 - "Out of Africa" - 6 1985 - "Amadeus" - 9 1984 - "Terms of Endearment" - 7.5 1983 - "Gandhi" - 6 1982 - "Chariots of Fire" - (6, maybe a rewatch needed) 1981 - "Ordinary People" - 7 1980 - "Kramer vs. Kramer" - 7 1979 - "The Deer Hunter" - 7 1978 - "Annie Hall" - 9 1977 - "Rocky" - 7 1976 - "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" - 7.5 (maybe 7.75, I dunno. But couldn't pull that 8 from me just quite) 1975 - "The Godfather Part II" - 9.5 1974 - "The Sting" - 6 1973 - "The Godfather" - 9.5 1972 - "The French Connection" - 7 1971 - "Patton" - 7 1970 - "Midnight Cowboy" - 7.5 1969 - "Oliver!" - (don't remember. 6 by default) 1968 - "In the Heat of the Night" - 7.5 1967 - "A Man for All Seasons" - 5 1966 - "The Sound of Music" - 6 1965 - "My Fair Lady" - 5 1964 - "Tom Jones" - (again.... by default.... 6) 1963 - "Lawrence of Arabia" - 9 1962 - "West Side Story" - 6 1961 - "The Apartment" - 7 1960 - "Ben-Hur" - 8 1959 - "Gigi" - (6.... don't remember) 1958 - "The Bridge on the River Kwai" - 9 1957 - "Around the World in 80 Days" - 8 (I'm the only one, but I really dug it) 1956 - "Marty" - 7.5 (interesting film that won.... but ultimately just feels cute and lighthearted) 1955 - "On the Waterfront" - 7 (story is weak.... but I'll give it a 7 because it's a relatively nicely produced film. Still feels kinda weaksauce tho.) 1954 - "From Here to Eternity" - 8 1953 - "The Greatest Show on Earth" - 5 1952 - "An American in Paris" - 7 1951 - "All About Eve" - 7.5 1950 - "All the Kings Men" - 6 1949 - "Hamlet" - 7.5 1948 - "Gentleman's Agreement" - (don't remember at all) 1947 - "The Best Years of Our Lives" - 7 (fun stories. Maybe deserves a 7.5, but war veteran sentimentality is just blegh. I'm not anti-right wing sentiment at all, but I dunno... I felt some stories needed more strength and others less. I do like Teresa Wright and the growth of her womanhood though. She's the strongest actress in the film, and she could've elevated it if her story were more substantial. Dana Andrews was the best actor and his story while solid could've been stronger. I don't like Hollywood making men appear like wimps with no ability to support themselves. Too easy to gain sympathy that way, and also tack on a stereotypical under-provided throwaway girlfriend character Virginia Mayo. Ok... i'll just give it a 7.5) 1946 - "The Lost Weekend" - 7 1945 - "Going My Way" - (no recollection at all) 1944 - "Casablanca" - 10 (perfect) 1943 - "Mrs. Miniver" - 7 (would probably be a 6 in normal cases since it's such a hogwash film, but I love wartime peril type films. They feel fanciful) 1942 - "How Green Was My Valley" - 5 (yeah.... it puts me to sleep, sorry) 1941 - "Rebecca" - 9.5 (looks and feels like European arthouse. Feels like a Bergman, except Hitchcock doesn't usually have those "haunted by death and sickness" like Bergman does. But he does like to create intrigue which is less Bergman's thing. Both are strong at creating some really engaging drama between characters that initially are perceived as young and innocent and caught up in a gothic drama that escalates from that point on) 1940 - "Gone with the Wind" - 7 (feeling generous. A 7. It's still kinda entertaining even if it's obvious kinda draw-attention kind of entertainment like Titanic with the set places, the romantic "my soul love" type stuff, and Clark Gable background a scorching fire on a horse playing heroine is kinda fun) 1939 - "You Can't Take It with You" - 7 1938 - "The Life of Emile Zola" - (no thoughts here) 1937 - "The Great Ziegfeld" - (nope, none) 1936 - "Mutiny on the Bounty" - 8 1935 - "It Happened One Night" - 7.5 1933/1934 - "Cavalcade" - (yeah... getting to those rarely talked about winners I didn't put much effort on) 1932/1933 - "Grand Hotel" - 7 1931/1932 - "Cimarron" - 6 1930/1931 - "All Quiet on the Western Front" - 9

Unforgiven is so unflashy and old-fashioned (at first look) in a decade full of youthful energy that only a re-watch for our (hopefully) more-matured eyes could help to truly appreciate it.

Having seen all of that, how do you feel about the Academy's choices for the Best Picture nominees/winners? Do they deserve the hate they often get for their selections on film forums like these? Do you think it's a generally good representation of a handful of the best/most significant films of the year, do you think it's a mess, somewhere in between? Just curious.

Honestly, when taken in aggregate, the actual winners are mostly pretty good. The top half of my list is pretty strong, and honestly it's around the Wings/Tom Jones tier where things start to slip. I only really dislike the bottom fifteen or so, but most of those still have some worthwhile aspects. Rarely has the Academy ever picked the straight-up worst film of the field, though, which I feel like they did with the bottom ten movies on my list.
