Reviewed in the 'last movie you watched' thread. It's a pretty decent coming of age film that tackles femininity and cultural heritage. Have a hard time wrapping my head around the outrage, but then I never followed the controversy beyond briefly glimpsing that awful Netflix poster and now having watched the movie I can't reconcile the insane vitriol and accusations of pedophilia/child porn. I'm assuming FilmTwitter has never seen a music-ly or tik tok video . Those on average are more disturbing but are also endemic of the film's point, because the amount of sex barraging young kids in media/social media is problematic but simultaneously diminishes the potential negative impact of using young kids to depict that in a film. None of them were new to that kind of dancing and the director consulted with a child psychologist and had careful direct conversations with the kids while making it.

tbh the outrage skews a bit sexist/racist to me, and seems to be coming from a place of total ignorance of the world tween girls are living. The thing won a sundance award. Reviews were positive, esp. from women/black women. It's fine.
