This is really tough, because I love her in everything (seriously, she is one of the all time greats), but my ultimate choice probably has to be The Landlord - she is simply hilarious here.

Also the shortest performance ever to take Best Actress at Cannes. She's that good in it.

I'm sorry @tyler I was boycotting this poll due to the lack of support so far for Shampoo.......which is my pick. But why was I boycotting the poll again - could I elaborate? Well fine, I will, thankyouforasking!: This board disrespects Beatty far too much yanno? My pick as the most underrated leading man EVER in Hollywood but the board is Redford crazy - fnck it, I'll say it again - Beatty was a better actor, writer, director than Redford but because this board likes blonde guys that means Lee Grant in Shampoo gets no votes at all in this poll? Grrrrrrrr............well now she has ..........1.

I've only seen Shampoo and Detective Story - like her a lot in both, going with Detective Story bc it was her major breakthru (on stage and film) and she plays it so spot-on, a bit edgy, and interesting there, even if it is a rather small role.
As for Beatty-Redford - there are people who prefer Redford?? Hmmmm. Do we have a poll on this??

It would depend how cranky I was when you asked me .........I used to have a rigid rule of thumb when I was an angry young man....... where I said an great actor remains so - no matter how many times they are bad and regardless of how bad they are - and a good actor is merely good no matter how many times they are great. Hard to define, but you know it when you see it........ Not sure that flies in this world of cell phones and $8 coffees but Richard Burton used to be my example - no matter the state of his career or awful films he could never be labeled anything else because he was Richard F'n Burton. Lee Grant we may have to label as similar to Piper Laurie actually - her career is so odd, limited and interrupted (Grant through no fault of her own, Laurie by her own choice) we have to think of a whole new word to classify them!

She should have been nominated for In the Heat of the Night Quentin Dean was better!
