Might sound like a strange question but just curious about it overall - in many ways it's how he avoids the press and controls the flow of information. There have always been presidents who use communication devices in different eras - FDR used radio fireside chats, Kennedy television.........Trump gets mocked a lot for Twitter use but it clearly helps and hurts him - which do you think wins out?

Helps him much more than it hurts him, easily. It keeps him as a regular part of the news cycle, which insulates him from larger scandals.

Trump has the strongest economy since the 80's and a stable world stage with ISIS defeated and still has mediocre approvals in the mid 40's and is losing hypothetical general election polls to Bernie Sanders (of course a lot can change). With conditions being what they are you'd think an incumbent would have approvals close to 60 percent and be on his way to a comfortable general election win. There's obviously something else running his numbers down and it is likely that he alienates people who might otherwise support him by acting like a clown on social media.

Neither.
He can say as many nonsense and tell as many lies there as he wants and it won't change how his voters view him (at least for 99 percent), because this is what they voted for. And the other ones know he's an idiot anyways.

And the other ones know he's an idiot anyways. That was kind of my point, though. His approval ratings "should" be higher right now. His social media antics lock in the opposition against him. Maybe it helped him get elected (but Clinton and the Republican primary field were awful candidates so not sure how much he really needed to do to beat them with his name ID) but it's not helping him right now.

Helps. The media is powerless when you can just pop off on Twitter at will with something incendiary. Trump on Twitter reminds me of how I described to my friends I'd be as a celebrity. I'd go on message boards with threads about me, and provide actual info non-anonymously. Someone on instagram or reddit discusses an interaction with me? I'd post in the comments with even more detail. Datalounge has a thread alleging I'm this and that, I show up there. etc. Trump basically killed the potency of gossip by going so direct all the time.

Not Twitter itself, but media as a whole is very helpful for Trump because he figured out he can get away with almost anything by saying something that is verifiably absurd to distract them from his flaws and it will always work because they either think they get more views debating whether Obama killed Abraham Lincoln than if Trump is crooked or are just too dumb to notice the trick.
