Portuguese Parliament voted yesterday to approve the legalization of euthanasia. Five right-to-die bills were approved by a comfortable margin. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who is known to be reluctant about euthanasia, could veto the new law, but parliament can override his veto by voting a second time for approval. If the legislative process proves successful, Portugal will become the fifth European country to legalize euthanasia. nytimes coverageWhat are your thoughts on the legalization of euthanasia / physician-assisted suicide? Are you for or against it? Why?

There's a difference between assisted suicide and euthanasia. Switzerland allows the former but not the latter, the article you linked to wasn't correct. Here's Swiss law about it : www.bj.admin.ch/bj/en/home/gesellschaft/gesetzgebung/archiv/sterbehilfe.htmlIf someone doesn't feel like insisting with medical care, I can't oblige him to accept medicines and so on. I wouldn't actively kill him though.

I'm generally very skeptical about euthanasia. Looks like a killing to me. On the other hand, if someone is clinically dead and his very close relatives insist on it, I don't see why it shouldn't happen.
Assisted suicide is another thing and I'm for it.

If you're an adult of sound mind with a painful or debilitating medical condition you should have the right to kill yourself and a doctor shouldn't be punished for helping you.
Also not sure the OP is using the word "euthanasia" correctly though. I thought that was like if someone had severe brain damage so you kill them or disconnect them from life support even though they are not in a condition to approve it or not.

I can't imagine a good reason why someone would be against this

If a doctor doesn't feel comfortable putting someone down he shouldn't have to and I'll just leave it at that.

If a doctor doesn't feel comfortable putting someone down he shouldn't have to and I'll just leave it at that. I certainly don't think any doctor should be compelled to do it but he shouldn't be punished for doing it if certain conditions are met either.
