We'll call these her definitive Top 5 nominations. I'm going with:Kramer vs. Kramer Sophie's Choice Silkwood A Cry in the Dark The Devil Wears Prada

that's a tall order. Ultimately I'd say:
1. Silkwood 2. Sohpie's Choice 3. Ironweed 4. The Post 5. Kramer vs Kramer
On a different day I might go for something else. There's a lot of greatness in that list.

My picks.....
Untouchables:
Bridges of the Madison County Sophie's Choice
Worthy
Adaptation. Out of Africa
Guilty Pleasure
Music of the Heart
From what I remember....... these are my favorites, but I'm missing a few/don't remember a few. The difference between 1982-2002 Streep pre-Adaptation and post-Adaptation is starking. Damn, she got washed up a long time ago... though i still like The Devil Wears Prada and Doubt. She was fun in those.

Silkwood obviously, as it's my favourite performance from an actress.
The other two untouchables for me have always been Sophie's Choice and Adaptation.
It gets way tougher after that to choose a final couple to round out the Top 5. I've gone with The Deer Hunter, as there's a beautiful elegance to her in it. Soft but powerful, I've always appreciated the hell out of it.
Then to rounding out the last spot, I've gone from her very first to her most recent nomination. For all the crap that is thrown at her post Prada nominations, most of which I don't agree with (they may not have all been nomination worthy, but they were all good or more), her work in The Post could easily sit among her so called 80's peak.

Kramer vs. Kramer Adaptation The Devil Wears Prada The Deer Hunter
Haven't seen Sophie's Choice or Silkwood but can't possibly list a 5th one. Loathed all of her nominations the last decade. Her legitimately funny (and admittedly unworthy) role in Little Women is better than her nominated work past decade.

Sophie's Choice, Doubt, and Adaptation are the obvious "big three" for me. Voted The Post and Music of the Heart (underrated) to fill out the list.

For all the crap that is thrown at her post Prada nominations, most of which I don't agree with (they may not have all been nomination worthy, but they were all good or more) She started regurgitating old Streep performances. For instance, The Devil Wears Prada is Streep doing the same thing as in She-Devil - getting too comfortable in her own skin. Yes... The Devil Wears Prada is where it started to go downhill, and it's alarming how there are 9+ votes for her performance in Doubt and The Devil Wears Prada. I don't even hate those because there are lots of bad acting in those films and Streep was actually one of the better actors in either. But they simply don't compare to the pure Americanism of Streep from 1982-2002.

Well I don't think drama is harder than comedy per se but monumental drama is harder than quirky comedy so 3 of her 80s knockouts top Adaptation/Devil Wear Prada......... Sophie's Choice/Silkwood/Evil Angels those are the foundations of her work to me.
Bridges of Madison County is next because - different decade/another character-type - and to me Postcards from the Edge is a better (at times) lighter turn than Adaptation or Devil Wears Prada.
I think those 5 I just feel a lot more and two of those aren't even great roles on the page even - I'd say Evil Angels and Madison County could easily be misplayed actually which makes them even more remarkable.

1. Silkwood 2. Sophie’s Choice 3. The Bridges of Madison County 4. Ironweed 5. Doubt
there's my five, for now, and I like her in all of her nods really - n/s Out of Africa or two with 0 votes here One True Thing and Into the Woods. I'll defend Florence Foster Jenkins which has 0 votes where Streep is laugh out loud funny, and heartbreaking, and has wonderful chemistry with Hugh Grant...

I highly, highly recommend Out of Africa - I'm surprised you haven't already seen it! I know it's not very popular on this board, but I personally love it. The production values, costumes, and score are all-time worthy, and for me, this is Streep at her most sexy and relaxed.
