doesn't look like a BP contender at allHow can you be that confident after a 30 second TV Spot?? Especially considering McKay's recent track record with the Academy.

doesn't look like a BP contender at allHow can you be that confident after a 30 second TV Spot?? Especially considering McKay's recent track record with the Academy. It was probably the mid-2000s CGI shot of the comet. And this doesn't look anything like his political films. It looks more like post- Downsizing Payne more than anything. The premise is really out there. If it wasn't for McKay and the cast, nothing about this remotely says "BP contender".

If it wasn't for McKay and the cast, nothing about this remotely says "BP contender". Based off of both script reviews and screening reports, it still sounds fairly inline with both Vice and The Big Short. Definitely the first time I'm hearing anyone comparing it to Payne. I'm not sure what is so 'out there' about the premise, it's just 3 scientists travelling the country to try and warn people about an incoming comet. That's pretty tame/basic compared to quite a few recent nominees/winners. Regardless, I'm still impressed that you're able to extrapolate all that from a 30 second ad, which is pretty much just 10-15 second clips from 2 different scenes.

Regardless, I'm still impressed that you're able to extrapolate all that from a 30 second ad Thanks! It's a gut instinct dude. Not everyone follows this stuff religiously on Twitter. I know the Academy likes McKay but he isn't a good director IMO and he has to break his streak sometime. He just can't keep pumping out BP nominees every couple years. And if there's one that feels (to me) like it would miss, it'd be the speculative pre-apocalyptic black comedy about a comet crashing into earth. Like even to say that premise makes you wonder if you're talking about a BP contender or the next Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg collab. Like I said earlier, if this wasn't being directed by Oscar-darling McKay and starring J-Law and Leo, I don't think as many people would be eyeing it as a potential contender especially when next awards season is going to be crowded af

If McKay makes a movie as good as Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg collabs, then it better fucking sweep the Oscars.

This is one of my most anticipated films of 2021 (mainly because it stars Leo who is my favorite actor working today and he is usually very picky when it comes to the films that he stars in so this gives me a lot of confidence that it will be good). The rest of the cast is loaded as well(not really a fan of Jonah Hill though. He usually annoys the shit out of me in pretty much everything I've seen him in. Such an overrated actor imo)
I like the idea that this will play out like a political satire. Can't wait to see it.
On a side note, its cool that Leo's character is wearing glasses in this (probably to play up his dorky scientist role and to make him look a lot smarter) I honestly can't recall any roles in the past where he wore glasses until this film. Just an observation.

Not sure what argument you were trying to make there. The fact of the matter is this film IS directed by McKay and the two leads are Leo & J Law so yeah its most likely going to be taken seriously by the Academy. Not sure why its so hard to grasp .

Exactement! When Edgar Wright gets two BPs/BDs in a row and follows them up with a movie that has a cast this huge and prestigious, then we can make the comparison. Alas, it seems wrongheaded. The Academy is obviously on Adam McKay's boat right now. Of course he can flop like DOR did with "Joy" (McKay's streak reminds me of his) but so far I see no reason to doubt this movie. Another important factor is that it's clearly going to be a climate change satire and we sure know that AMPAS members love their hot button issue movies. If the latest "Borat" movie can get two big nominations and make it close to BP, then this production should have no trouble reaching further.

Yeah, I don’t see anything to change my mind currently that this isn’t going to be one of the top 3 or so threats to win BP.

Where does Netflix get all this money to throw around? I feel like we're going to find out later they're laundering coke money or something.

We haven't had a movie star like Lawrence since Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, and Angelina Jolie - that's a woman, of course I meant. This is quite an extraordinary feat. New female movie stars appeared dead since that trio. And she's singlehandedly doing it with no close competititor. Been a few male movie stars tho.

So that's why there was no budget for a decent wig for her.

She's not on the same level as Julia, Sandra and Angelina.
