But Laura Dern won a slew of critics awards, and they don't care about over due. She was also in 2 high profile Best Picture nominees. Renee Zellweger won a 2nd Oscar with less acclaimed. So did Mahershala Ali, Christoph Waltz, Hilary Swank. I believe critics wanted her to win the Oscar and helped her along. Obviously, there is no way we will know if that's the case, but I just can't see Dern winning a 2nd Oscar for that performance. Then again, it was such a weak year for the category that I suppose it's possible.

But she was playing an unlikeable, unsympathetic character that audiences weren't going to rally around.

no, I don't believe in career wins. Never did, even for some of my favorite actors. To me it should be about the best performance nominated that year.
