Trying to branch out here and discover something outside of my usual tastes. So post your favorite album from whatever artists you like, and I promise that I'll eventually try them out. I'll post some of my favorites later, but this is really a chance for me to look through some of the popular acts and see what works for me.

I've found a grand total of one hip hop album I enjoy, so I'm open to more. I promise to give every album recommended at least one track, so you have me at your mercy for that long.

They're quite good, I admit that. Just not my speed.

Are you the guy who only listens to acoustic guitar music and Japanese music? Not sure how you're going to like some of these outside of maybe the Beck album I resent that. I don't like most acoustic guitar. But yeah, that's me. I tend to lean towards either folk music or really weird stuff (which is often Japanese: nobody else has turned out stuff like After Dinner, Guernica, or Yoshiko Sai). Also a fan of jazz and older pop from the 1950s. It's not so much that I especially like these genres, but rather that I dislike most rock or rap or pop. I may be okay with one or two songs, but a whole album gets on my nerves. A case in point is The Wall and London Calling, both of which I reasonably enjoyed, but I can't imagine sitting down and devoting myself to those again. They're too... aggressive. I know that this board's tastes are heavily rock, so this is my last ditch effort to try to get on board with that.

If you want to get into rock music you might do better with recommendations specifically for gentler rock music that doesn't feel aggressive. A lot of 80's alternative rock kind of falls into that category, it often had kind of an "airy" sound, the electric guitars were softer and higher pitched, there wasn't really a driving beat, and so on. The Smiths, The Cure, and early R.E.M. would be examples. Maybe some early U2 too. You might be familiar with that stuff and not like it either but I could see someone who thinks 60's rock, punk, or the heavier 90's alt. rock is too heavy and aggressive liking it. The album Colossal Youth by Young Marble Giants might be something I'd recommend too. It was a very minimal "rock" (not sure I'd even call it that) album with just one or two chord guitar riffs, keyboard, and a girl singer with no drums. It has a very gentle and mellow atmosphere and is great for listening to late at night. It came out in the late 70's and was lumped in with punk at the time just because it's minimal and stripped down but it isn't really like punk at all.

I mean you can ignore/burn my list in this thread which is not only aggressive, it's damn near assaulting .........but Steely Dan was a smart band, with a pop sense and sophisticated song structures within Rock/Pop .........that may be something you'd like and can listen listen to for a whole record maybe.......

Well, I put Highway 61 on a list to check out. I've never jibed much with Dylan, but that one has a real good opening and I'm willing to dive in again. The others were pretty meh. I'll take Captain Beefheart's amusical wildness over those any day. Not that I'm a fan of Beefheart, but at least he's... uh... well, he gets your attention. For better or worse, he certainly doesn't bore.

This was my first full listen of the recommendations so far (only been through yours and Pac's). It's quite good. I know that I had tried this a little while ago when you posted in the "Best albums of 00's" thread, but I must not have been in the mood for it then and dismissed it as "perfectly fine." I'll still need time to digest it, but yeah, this is good. Don't think it'll become some great favorite or anything like that.
