Hearing rumblings that The Prom is a Globes thing at best, which really isn't that surprising.

Hearing rumblings that The Prom is a Globes thing at best, which really isn't that surprising. It's just speculation at this point. Nobody really knows which movie the talk on Twitter is about. With that said, I would also not predict this for anything outside of the Globes unless reviews suggest otherwise.

Zendaya getting an Oscar nod for a Sam Levinson project... suuuuure. I'll believe it when I see it Same. It may have worked at the Emmy's but doubt it happens at the Oscars (I thought Euphoria was awful but I understand it being seen as edgy and buzz, there's nothing that guarantees a COVID chamber piece will be received the same way, let alone by a completely different voting body under completely different circumstances).

If you're referring to the "I just saw the WORST movie" tweet, someone replied asking if it was The Prom and the OP liked that reply.

Well, there was a bit more to the reply than just the question, so I don't think that's conclusive. According to AW, at least, he might be talking about Superintelligence.

I know the two categories aren't inherently linked but still, Italy not choosing The Life Ahead as their International Feature Film submission ain't great for Loren.

So I just watched the trailer for The Prom and... surely Meryl Streep can't get nominated for this, right? Right!?

After the teaser, I thought it looked fun and there might be a small chance voters would love something uplifting this year and go for it. After seeing the trailer though, I don’t see anything, but a Globe nomination in her future. I think it looks cheesy in a fun way, but I like early seasons of Glee and the High School Musical movies which this looks so similar too. It’s too bad and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie look so cheesy and not in a way voters would like because I do think that a great uplifting musical could have done well with awards this year because of how bleak the year was in comparison. (Although there were a few bright spots like hopefully a vaccine coming soon.)

Probably still just a Globes thing, but it’s getting a lot more positive reactions than I expected. Could it stick out in a bleak year because it is uplifting and not entirely terrible like say Hillbilly Elegy? I could see SAG going for this because they’re usually basic, and they like Streep and Kidman. If Streep can go beyond a Globe nomination and get a SAG nomination, I don’t see her missing the Oscar nomination this year.

The tweet reactions for The Prom are good enough, and she's gotten in for less well recieved films. Kidman can maybe also happen if supporting actress stays a wasteland. But Streep being Streep, is probably the film's likeliest acting bet.

The embargo is still on, so there is going to be a sampling bias in that people who like the movie are going to be more comfortable sharing their positive thoughts than people who hated the movie are going to be sharing their negative thoughts. After all, Netflix isn't going to throw a hissy fit over tweets praising the movie. Streep is likely getting the Globe nomination and nobody can completely rule her out at the Oscars, but I think the tweets don't mean much.

It doesn't help that a number of tweets go out of their way to say stuff like, "should do well at the Globes".

I guess she’ll have Let Them All Talk too since Gold Derby moved it recently from television to film. Between her reviews for The Prom even if reviews are so-so and Let Them All Talk, I think it might be hard for her to miss especially in this unusual year.

I think she's making it in at the Globes for at least one of the two, but I am skeptical about the Oscars. Like you said, I think she needs either SAG or BAFTA in addition to the Globes to make it in at the Oscars.

For the Oscars, obviously she can still miss, but it’s hard for me to see that if she has two well received roles especially in a weird year, and with her not being nominated for awhile, at least for her.

LOL, it's kind of crazy that Streep's last nomination was less than 3 years ago and that is actually the longest she's gone without a nomination since her 14th nomination for The Devil Wears Prada. Maybe it's just me and nobody cares about Ammonite anymore, but Winslet got perhaps the best reviews of her career for that one and it's not like she's a nobody, so it would be really weird if Streep gets nominated for this hot mess over Winslet (who is basically on the outside looking in). But, of course, I wouldn't put it past the Academy, because they are obsessed with Streep.

I thought there was a thread for her movie, but I couldn’t find one, so I posted the news here. This doesn’t seem to be good at all for Andra Day at all. So Davis vs. Mulligan maybe unless Zendaya is actually a thing but probably not. I had previously dismissed Mulligan, but maybe I did so too soon. I can’t really see that kind of role winning, but this year maybe it happens. ETA: So Hulu did buy it and will campaign for it, but I don’t really have any faith in them.

I don't think it's that bad -- Hulu seems to have bought it with the explicit idea that it would be their awards player, and Paramount was definitely grooming it for their awards run, and Daniels seems keen to campaign vigorously for it. I think Day is fine, at least for now.
