Nominees to be announced Feb 10th, the day after the Oscars. My nominees will be much better than theirs, I promise. Have to say...I wasn't crazy about 2019. This time last year I was so hyped because 2018 inspired so much awe from the unlikeliest places (and I hadn't even seen Birds of Passage or Shoplifters yet). Last year I was only working with 83 films and I was in love with like 25 of them. This year I'm working with 106 (making this my most-viewed year to date) and I love like 9 of them. That's not a great ratio. All that whining aside, there were a few diamonds in the rough and this year did give us two of my favorite films of the whole decade, and even with the films I wasn't crazy about there are plenty of silver linings (unlike the Academy, I'm going to seriously spread the love). And yes, feel free to treat these as overbearing FYCs for the AMARAs because that's basically what they are. Once again, six nominees for the acting categories and screenplay categories because it's just a thing we do now, and five nominees for the rest. As I said this year I'm working with 106 films so I've seen most everything I wanted to, minus the pesky foreign films. Here's what I'm still missing: About EndlessnessAnd Then We DancedClemencyInvisible LifeLes MisérablesThe Painted BirdProximaSystem CrasherTruth and Justicethere's no telling how many if any of those would affect my lineups but I also have no idea when I'll get to see them--maybe two weeks from now, maybe five years. If I see any of them before the AMARAs and they affect my lineups, I'll be sure to shout 'em out But let's leave it there, shall we. I'm still finalizing my picks for some of the categories but I can say that's it's going to be a wild ride full of twists, turns and snubs, so pop the campaign and get ready because the Third Annual Tommen Awards are about to go down!!

Would you post a list of your eligible films, in case there are some hidden gems we can recommend at the eleventh hour?

Let Neptune strike me dead! -- A whopping total of 58 films a recognized, up seven from last year's 51 and up 21 from the Academy's 37 (excluding shorts). I didn't have a directorial debut category last year but I nominated more documentaries, so it kind of evens out. -- Her Smell is the least-nominated film in the BP category, following a similar trajectory to last year's The Rider. It was in the mix for sound mixing, directing and ensemble but didn't make the cut. Knives Out only received four nominations itself despite also being nominated for BP. -- Apollo 11 is the first documentary film to receive a nomination outside the documentary category, earning a well-earned nod for sound mixing. --My lowest-ranked film to receive a nomination is Harriet for Original Song. My highest-ranked film to not receive any nominations is The Beach Bum at #16. -- Deepest apologies to Barbara Ling. Once Upon a Time came soooo close for production design. It was a stacked year! Midsommar missed out too. -- Of the Academy's BP lineup, OUATIH is the only one not to receive a single nomination. **ducks** winners will be announced next week on Sunday the 16th

Sound Design and Sound Mixing, eh...can you tell me the difference? Sound design is what I call sound editing, and it's mostly for my own benefit as a reminder that sound editing (as I understand it) involves the creation of sounds and sound effects while sound mixing is about how those sounds are mixed in post and interact with each other in the final film. In Fabric for example uses a lot of menacing whispers mixed with the score (and Rise of Skywalker does too for that matter) to create an oppressive and dreamlike atmosphere that closes in on the viewer. Pretty similar to Suspiria's soundscape last year actually, which I also nominated, but there's nothing special about those individual sound effects themselves--they're just whispers. On the other hand, Ford v Ferrari is nominated for sound design because the cars sound wonderfully aggressive and loud.

I could tell from the feedback that it was one of those films where you either love it or hate it, and I wasn't expecting to love it but it really sneaked up on me and walloped me over the head. I love how the first half is so hyper-stylized and the second so agonizingly human. Felt sweeping and intimate at the same time. I was expecting the runtime to be a chore but it wasn't at all. I was down for the ride.

Well those are two fine co-leads for your supporting choices, a fine choice for lead actor, and an abomination against mankind for actress, but to each their own.
