There was a Gold Derby panel, and one of the commentators mentioned that the film that makes people cry or has the most emotional reaction, is the one that wins. Think Green Book, Braveheart, A Beautiful Mind, Gladiator, Titanic, American Beauty and Return of the King as prime examples. Which films, regardless of how you feel about it or how many awards it won, had that emotional wallop at the end? My best guess is probably Jojo Rabbit and Parasite.

Jojo Rabbit and 1917 for me.
EDIT: Oh yeah, completely forgot about Little Women.

For me definitely Little Women. Beth’s dying still got me even though I knew it was coming. Also there were a lot of other moments like Marmee giving her scarf to the soldier, Teddy’s grandfather being so affected by Beth’s piano playing and later her death, Amy turning down Fred and panicking that she made the wrong choice despite knowing how it was going to turn out.
Parasite made me laugh, but then it made me angry with bloodlust, and then it made me really depressed because it was all too real. I don’t know if that’s a great thing for it though because unfortunately it seems voters prefer happy or hopeful endings or at least movies that have a really obvious message ranking the movies with those type of endings higher than others.
I know that a lot of people I follow on social media cried during Marriage Story, but I thought that there was a lot of humor and also hope that other than maybe the big blowup I didn’t find it sad. Even though I didn’t cry, I still had a strong reaction to it.
Jojo Rabbit was another that I saw a lot of people had a very emotional reaction to, but I guess I’m a robot because I only teared up at one scene.
Ford v Ferrari was a definite crowdpleaser too, so there was a lot of laughing and thrills. That one moment got me near the end probably more than the similar thing in Jojo Rabbit did.
I guess The Irishman would be just below that. It wasn’t a tearjerker, but I thought that one of themes of growing old was pretty powerful.
Then 1917 would be about here. I enjoyed it, and I definitely felt a lot during the ending, but I don’t know that the rest of it stuck with me.
Joker and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood would definitely be on the bottom for me. There were laughs and some shocks, but I didn’t have much of an emotional reaction.

I cried for my own cinematic howling fncking pain at the horror of Jojo Rabbit I cried after I shouted to Scarjo and (especially) Adam that I hoped they both were dead!.........but apologized immediately Um and of course.......the flood of emotion, no joke, of DePac interacting for likely the last time, ~50 years on-screen and the single greatest American actors post-Brando, and doing that thing where the GOATs were actually being the GOATs. Amen.

None so far this year. But 1917 and Little Women were very close. Haven't seen Jojo Rabbit, Once upon a time in Hollywood, Joker yet.

I don't cry in movies but if I did, I would probably in Marriage Story, and definitely in Jojo Rabbit (in the shoe lace scene).

I know that DeepArcher was crying for someone to end it all during Joker.

Gotta admit that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Irishman unexpectedly hit me. They felt like the culmination of both director’s respective careers and would have been fine final films from either.

1917 hit me like a gut-punch at three different times. Jojo Rabbit also got me once or twice.

Why is everyone saying that marriage Story made them cry? The toy story music put off any potential emotional punch.
With that said, The Irishman, Parasite and Jojo Rabbit nearly did it for me. The former moreso with the ending shot and DeNiro looking at his pictures

Marriage Story, particularly the last 5 minutes when Adam Driver read Nicole's letter and then followed them down the street dressed as a ghost I bawled.

Marriage Story, particularly the last third when Adam Driver gets the "big news", had me getting extremely teary-eyed. Also Little Women.

1917 a couple times
And I did start to get glossy eyed when Driver read the letter at the end of Marriage Story

So far none of them and I doubt the rest would make me cry either. They all look terribly generic.

awakenings. this wrecked me back in the day. dug this clip up to see if it would still make me cry and yup, still gets me. randy newman's piano, the closeups, the way de niro is able to be calm in her arms... ooof. emotional torture

To this day, I don't think a film has wrecked me the way Toy Story 3 has, Best Picture nominee or not.

If we're branching away from the 2019 nominees, Manchester By the Sea and Captain Phillips will never not destroy me.

Away from 2019, one of the very few movies/scenes that made me cry was the ending of Schindler's List.
