two big COVID-related political developments 1. Trump unsurprisingly signed the stimulus into law. I think that means $600 checks will be going out soon, but I'm not sure because his call for $2000 checks still leave kind of a complicated mess that dems are capitalizing on. 2. The even bigger story is that the House just passed a stimulus boost to increase the checks to $2000. The big story is the amount of Republicans that joined the motion, which passed 275-134. That means over 40 Republicans voted for it. The momentum for this is clearly not entirely partisan, and Marco Rubio just signaled that he supports the increase too. The question is whether McConnell will let this come to the Senate. If he does does, the increase may have enough GOP support to go through. But McConnell is only going to do that if he feels it'll improve Purdue and Loeffler's chances in GA, which is the only reason we got the $600 in the first place. This begins and ends with McConnell, and I'm not holding my breath. Also don't know what this means for the status of those $600 checks that are already signed into law (and the IRS is already rushing to get them out). Are those in limbo until this increase is decided? Or would the IRS have to send out an additional $1400 check later provided the increase gets passed? I have no idea.

My mom tested positive today. She said she feels like she got hit by a truck. Said she's very tired and achy, but doesn't seem to have any other symptoms at the moment. She's been instructed to stay home and quarantine for the next 14 days, so we'll see if it gets worse during that time. My dad and younger sister also live in the same house with her and they're both immuno-compromised...so that's really disconcerting. UPDATE - My mom says she feels a little better every day, but she also has a new symptom each day, so I'm kinda confused. But now my dad has tested positive as well and apparently has gotten pneumonia on top of it. He has a lot of underlying conditions (asthma, seizures, liver issues and a brain aneurysm) that I'm afraid will prevent his body from fighting this as well as it might have otherwise. My younger sister is going to get retested in the next couple of days to see if she has it too...which I'm assuming she does. Pretty difficult to be around two people who have it all the time and not get it yourself. Guess we'll all just have to continue playing the waiting game and hope that none of them get any worse over the few days and weeks. UPDATE #2 - Well, my mom and sister seem to be on the other side of it. They both still have some loss of taste and smell, but the other symptoms have dissipated and they're able to get up and around and do things like they normally did before. So that's good! My dad on the otherhand is in rough shape... fever, fatigue, trouble breathing, etc. He was given a machine that checks to make sure his oxygen levels are normal and apparently there are right now, so I guess that's a good sign? But he's not doing much else other than sleeping pretty much all day. Just have to keep playing the waiting game...

As for your dad, many people say that one of the first important signs/symptoms is the low oxygen level, especially for those who face breathing conditions like asthma. So if that's normal I think his breathing trouble will get better soon.

So began our one week of virtual learning today before we return to school next week, despite the rest of the province being on lockdown until close to the end of the month. As lacklustre as the online option is, I hope it's extended because our numbers are through the roof.

The UK is back in full fuckin lockdown.Mostly because of this incompetent muppet. I think another UK lockdown was inevitable, the only question was when to impose it. The Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Austria are all in lockdown. Unfortunately, no place here in Europe has truly managed to contain the spread of the virus the way countries like Taiwan or New Zealand have.

Our provincial "lockdown" is being extended, as is remote learning for only elementary schools. My VP emailed support staff today asking who is actually showing up on Monday because I think some of my co-workers might walk. This is fucked.

My VP emailed support staff today asking who is actually showing up on Monday because I think some of my co-workers might walk. This is fucked. After a useless four hour union call, it's actually a lot more grim than this. It's unsafe for all elementary and secondary students, except those in special education. Yes, often the most vulnerable and least likely to wear a mask are welcomed back Monday. Their teachers don't have to come, but all the support staff do. Absolutely dreading this.

Well, things are getting out of hand in Portugal. The government decided to smooth the restrictions in the holidays and, as a result, we went from nearly 4,000 cases a day (before Christimas) to more than 10,000 a day in the last ten days, which is a lot for a country with only 10 million people. The number of deaths has also increased to more than 150 per day in the last few days. We're on a new lokdown now, but schools and colleges will remain open, so I'm not sure we're in the right direction.

So, uh, how is everyone doing? It's been over a year since the first case in my country and schools are opening back up on Monday (special education doesn't count under the unsafe umbrella so my department and our students have been going in every day since the new year). I'm surrounded by PPE, news of new variants, articles about reaching "the Covid Wall," and let me tell you... I am there. My face is right up to that wall. This morning I socially distanced a birthday card drop off for my mom and my parents proceeded to tell me I'm being naive, the government is forcing vaccinations with AI technology to track us (and those that refuse are going to be put in camps), masks don't work, etc. I'm so, so tired, guys. Every single day is a challenge for me going into work and my government and union do nothing to ease anxiety. My own family gets to work from home and read about conspiracy theories all day. I'm exhausted.

I'm exhausted. I'm doing okay, I guess. I only go out of my house once every two months, and I always make sure to take my sanitizer and mask. The virus is dying down here and vaccination is going on, but we have other issues. My school is opening up this Friday, but I can't go back right now due to a variety of reasons, so I had to answer "No" in the consent form.
