I don't watch a lot of live TV anymore, but I do on Sundays and I don't think I've seen a single Bad Boys 3 commercial... so that's super impressive.

January was a smart time time release Bad Boys, less competition, and it's not really the dumping ground it used to be.

Will Smith is still one of the elite box office draws in the industry. There is a reason Disney paid him what they did to act as insurance for Aladdin, so it didn't end up another Dumbo.
It's just that he's no longer as impervious as he was at his very peak. Bad reviews (Gemini Man) can hurt his films odds of success, as with most stars (If Bad Boys 3 was sitting on a 20% Rotten Tomatoes score, expect that opening to be at least halved. The good reviews helped a lot). I also think audiences still have a preference for Smith in his "fun loving, wisecracking" mode. The more dour and serious he is (especially in poorly reviewed dramatic films), the less appealing he is. I always thought he would kill it at the box office making more films like Hitch, but can't blame the guy for wanting to try different genres.
But this is why he still has massive greenlighting power on projects. If everything goes right, the upside can still be gigantic.

The reviews definitely played a part, but I also feel like as you mentioned, that people love it when Smith does his classic "Will Smith shtick" more, and is charismatic, as opposed to something where he looks more dour and serious like Gemini Man. It worked in spades for Aladdin, because he actually proved to be a solid Genie and audiences really took to that film, even by the standards of a live-action Disney remake, it had fantastic legs. Bad Boys 3 is more of the same, and definitely in his wheelhouse, too.

The Fresh Prince and Marty Mar on the comeback!
I guess “one last time” is going to change to about “3..4 more times”
People always loved the team up with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence going back to the 90s. Both were on two of the biggest sitcoms in the 90s and it looks like their chemistry has carried over since that time. They were great on that Lebron HBO show “The Shop”.

I actually rewatched the first Bad Boys a few weeks ago, and had forgotten how good their chemistry was in the original. I just think they work really well as a team, both for the reasons you listed, but also they have quite the brother comradery inbetween all the explosive shit. It makes for a most entertaining time.

Agreed..I think that both being around the same age and their comic talents helped their chemistry in playing off each other in this film series. Plus the classic buddy cop trope of one being the serious family man (Lawrence) and the other the single hotshot playboy type (Smith) helps with them. With the success of this movie there will definitely be more. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rush Hour 4 would be announced in the near future.

It was actually announced ( Ratner is only producing, but not directing thankfully), but seems to have fallen apart. Wouldn't surprise me if it's suddenly greenlit, and a shoot date is announced now. There's also Beverly Hills Cop 4, though that seems like it's going to Netflix and not theaters for some reason (I guess they're looking to see how Coming 2 America does?).

Also because Beverly Hills Cop 3 had a massive decline from the first two films. Well yes, but it's been over twenty years, and they're giving Coming 2 America a theatrical release. I see no reason why Paramount wouldn't have done the same with BHC, unless Eddie's relationship with Netflix is now that strong.

Knives Out might be the success story of 2019.People were really hungry for a return of star driven murder mystery films weren't they?.Bad Boys going to fly over a $100M in a couple of weeks or less.Great start.

I can't remember a movie where a big A-list star had more riding on it than RDJ with Doolittle. A big budget bomb is the absolute worst way to start his post-Marvel career. This might knock him off the A-list. I don't think he can open a non-Marvel movie anymore outside of maybe another Sherlock Holmes sequel.
Meanwhile, I don't think Will Smith ever really left the A list but this is a big comeback for him. Bad Boys isn't really a huge "name" franchise. One hasn't been made in well over a decade and people only saw them in the first place because they were Will Smith movies, same as with Men in Black. So for it to open to 70 mil in January shows he still has drawing power.

RDJ has made more than enough money to where he needs to go back to doing a middle budget movie. He needs work with an established breakout director.

He needs work with an established breakout director. RDJ should have started out post-Marvel with either a Sherlock Holmes sequel or something low risk like a low/mid budget comedy or drama. A non-franchise big budget thing like this put him in the worst possible position.
