Notes From Underground obviously - and you can get it on a shirt to pick up girls because it intrigues them....... Or girls will simply think you're hypochondriac. Or, even worse, they'll think it's the truth.

Or, even worse, they'll think it's the truth. Or it reminds them of their dear old Dad which are some issues she is still working though.........or they are just thankful you aren't wearing a diaper ........or they maybe ....just ............maybe admire that pacinoyes sense of fashion humor like with my "Ask me about my lobotomy T-shirt"

Re-reading it now.......everyone should read it.......especially now...... An oblong puddle inset in the course asphalt; like a fancy footprint filled to the brim with quicksilver; like a spatulate hole through which you can see the nether sky. Surrounded. I note, by a diffuse tentacled black dampness where some dull dun dead leaves have stuck.
Nabokov, Bend Sinister 1947

Evan S. Connell's - Diary of a Rapist - one of the great solitary frightening books of an isolated and diseased mind of the 20th century that laid the framework for Taxi Driver (1967) I'm sure Schrader knows it - with its slow burn, seemingly tossed off opening sentence.......not unlike Notes From The Underground the opening becomes a kind of mantra JANUARY 1
Last night Bianca shook me awake and told me to stop grinding my teeth. Nothing gives her more satisfaction than to humiliate me.
So one year ends, another begins.

Technically NOT a novel but a true crime book ..........but written in the manner that it blurs facts with the novelist's life - the great Emmanuel Carrère - the greatest true crime book I ever read (turned into a pretty good film with Daniel Auteuil and the basis in many ways to the great film Time Out with Aurélien Recoing - that changes the story overall) Awesome first sentence: ‘On the Saturday morning of January 9, 1993, while Jean-Claude Romand was killing his wife and children, I was with mine in a parent-teacher meeting…’
