1970
Shirley Stoler, The Honeymoon Killers
Catherine Deneuve, Tristana
Sophia Loren, Sunflower
Ali MacGraw, Love Story
Romy Schneider, The Things of Life
Barbra Streisand, The Owl and the Pussycat
This was a tough year. Had to dive deep for some of these perfs and I still haven't seen some of the Oscar nominees like Miles or Snodgress, but I'm pretty happy with this group. Especially love Stoler and Loren.
1971
Jane Fonda, Klute
Jane Asher, Deep End
Ruth Gordon, Harold and Maude
Glenda Jackson, Sunday Bloody Sunday
Liv Ullmann, The Emigrants
Kitty Winn, The Panic in Needle Park
Talk about a banner year for this category. Lots of great perfs miss, including Geraldine Page, Lea Massari, Vanessa Redgrave, and Julie Christie (twice), and there's still more to see!
1972
Joanne Woodward, The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds
Margit Carstensen, The Bitter Years of Petra von Kant
Goldie Hawn, Butterflies Are Free
Liza Minnelli, Cabaret
Maggie Smith, Travels with My Aunt
Anita Strindberg, Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key
Great year for actresses in films with excessively long titles. Some of these are longtime holdouts (Carstensen, Hawn, Minnelli), the rest are recent additions. Woodward rocked me to my core. It reminded me a lot of Carstensen's perf: both bitter and caustic women locked in self-destructive cycles and haunted by their pasts.
1973
Tatum O'Neal, Paper Moon
Mariangela Melato, Love and Anarcy
Lina Polito, Love and Anarchy
Barbra Streisand, The Way We Were
Ana Torrent, The Spirit of the Beehive
Joanne Woodward, Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams
Woodward is the only new addition here. I need to give The Exorcist a rewatch to see if Burstyn comes back into the fold but otherwise there's not much left to see this year. Marsha Mason is the last "relevant" perf I need to see and somehow I doubt she'll make an impact.
1974
Valerie Perrine, Lenny
Anicée Alvina, Successive Slidings of Pleasure
Faye Dunaway, Chinatown
Goldie Hawn, The Sugarland Express
Mariangela Melato, Swept Away
Claire Wilbur, Score
Basically built this lineup in 2019 and 2018. Apart from Dunaway (this was her career best btw), all of these are [semi]recent viewings and I love all of them. Perrine explodes onto the screen, Alvina is capricious and mysterious, Hawn is her adorable self, Melato nails a challenging role in a provocative film, and Wilbur brings just the right amount of salt to her bisexual maneating ladykilling homewrecker in the liberated and celebratory Score. Huge shoutout to Olivia Hussey for being Black Christmas's MVP.
1975
Isabelle Adjani, The Story of Adèle H.
Shima Iwashita, Under the Blossoming Cherry Treers
Glenda Jackson, Hedda
Carol Kane, Hester Street
Rachel Roberts, Picnic at Hanging Rock
Susan Sarandon, The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Weird year, and not just because I had to really dig deep for these performances. Lots of category confusion going on. Fletcher is clearly supporting to me so she gets an easy win there, but Roberts required some mental gymnastics. Ultimately I think she's lead though I get that it's a stretch. Adjani is my winner for doing what she does best: screaming and crying.
1976
Sissy Spacek, Carrie
Margit Carstensen, Chinese Roulette
Edith Clever, The Marquise of O
Eiko Matsuda, In the Realm of the Senses
Millie Perkins, The Witch Who Came from the Sea
Ana Torrent, Cría Cuervos
Love this group. Spacek's eyes give one of the best performances of their career.
1977
Shelley Duvall, 3 Women
Anne Bancroft, The Turning Point
Shima Iwashita, Ballad of Orin
Diane Keaton, Looking for Mr. Goodbar
Sophia Loren, A Special Day
Simone Signoret, Madame Rosa
Crazy about this group too. Signoret and Iwashita are more recent additions but the rest have there a bit. Duvall is untouchable.
1978
Ingrid Bergman, Autumn Sonata
Ellen Burstyn, Same Time, Next Year
Jill Clayburgh, An Unmarried Woman
Jane Fonda, Coming Home
Mary Beth Hurt, Interiors
Liv Ullmann, Autumn Sonata
I don't think 2019 affected this lineup at all. It looked amazing at the beginning of the year and it still looks amazing. I go back and forth the winner. Claybrugh was my pick for a while but I've gone back to Bergman and I think it'll stay that way.
1979
Sally Field, Norma Rae
Judy Davis, My Brilliant Career
Jane Fonda, The China Syndrome
Bette Midler, The Rose
Marie-France Pisier, The Brontë Sisters
Sigourney Weaver, Alien
UNION!! Field is untouchable. She's always going to be my win for that film. Rest of these have been around a while, save for Pisier who was handily the best thing about a movie that also starred Isabelle Huppert and Isabelle Adjani. Overall this was a weaker year for the category and I don't have that much more to see, but I'm content for now.
