'70: Claire's Knee '71: McCabe and Mrs. Miller '72: The Godfather '73: The Long Goodbye '74: Celine and Julie Go Boating '75: Barry Lyndon '76: How Yukong Moved the Mountains '77: Stroszek '78: Interiors '79: Apocalypse Now
Here it is.... the ultimate decade. Unfortunately 1974 has 4 of my all time films and all of those would win in ANY of those years except 1972 and 1975. And maybe my top 5 of '74 would even win over any of these except (add-on) 1970.
1974 and 1977 are so good there's no space to award everyone, but 1974 is the GOAT year of all time along with 2000. And maybe 2003 trails just by a little.

1970: MASH (Robert Altman) 1971: Fiddler on the Roof (Norman Jewison) 1972: What's Up, Doc? (Peter Bogdanovich) 1973: Paper Moon (Peter Bogdanovich) 1974: The Conversation (Francis Ford Coppola) 1975: Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones) 1976: The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (Nicholas Gessner) 1977: Star Wars (George Lucas) 1978: Magic (Richard Attenborough) 1979: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (John Irvin) 1979 RUNNER UP: All That Jazz (Bob Fosse)
Since Tinker Tailor is technically a miniseries (albeit helmed by one man and always very focused), I threw in a runner up.

1973: The Hourglass Sanatorium This one is really close to being my pick for the year. The production design is mindblowing, and the way it's directed on top of that genuinely mirrors the way my dreams feel more than any other movie ever has. Lots of very weird, interesting ideas in it. Also am really looking forward to seeing The Stolen Painting, that'll be the next one from Ruiz I check out.

Lots of very weird, interesting ideas in it. Also am really looking forward to seeing The Stolen Painting, that'll be the next one from Ruiz I check out. I'm a big fan of surrealist cinema and I consider The Hourglass Sanatorium among the greatest works of that particular movement and among the greatest films of all time for sure. As you wrote, dreams have never been projected in a better way. As for The Hypothesis Of The Stolen Painting it is among Ruiz's best works and definitely worth a watch. It's a fascinating essay on the way one can view art and if there's a way to find a deeper hidden meaning in it. It's somewhat farcical elements make for a very interesting watch.

My Night at Maud's A Clockwork Orange The Godfather The Wicker Man The Godfather Part II Jaws Network Eraserhead The Deer Hunter Alien
Some tough choices-- it hurts not to be able to pick Cabaret or One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I just saw The Wicker Man for the first time recently and it's unlike anything I expected. I should rewatch Paper Moon though to see if it truly takes back the title.
