CMAT Nashville
I've talked about this song a lot in other places - but what album opens with a suicide song - and then follows it with her "suicide notes" in her songs that she "leaves behind" - it's painfully funny - with its references to Anna Nicole, K-Pop, Tequila Shots and stealing hotel soap.......and it's painfully er painful too "I'm sorry if you loved me, I hate that I'm this way"...........that's a gutting, ending line .....and you can hear the song a million times and never get that it's about her depression because she sings the shit out of this song - and it's surface veneer is exuberant.
The opener of 2022 - by a lot .........and really quite close to being the song of the year overall too........and I'll go even further - it's the best work of Art about mental health - in books, movies, TV, music, anything - in the MAR era that I know of......what a way to start a career.....

Because I just ranked the songs on this album in the other thread...
GNR at their most political, and unlike anything they had ever written before (or since). Probably my second favorite song of theirs in their catalog after Estranged.

One of the years most beautiful, ambitious and best songs on the years best album so far - and maybe the best lyrics of the whole year too (the 2nd to last line is wrong afaik in EVERY online tranfer of the song and I'm pretty sure I'm right ): Deaths and Entrances lyrics
Pub -(on)wards we crawled again Queue had skewed around the bend And me, the last of all my friends Halloween in Galway
I'm sorry buddy not tonight Peter muttered steely-eyed The lads are in and out of sight Concerned as always
I wandered lonely as the crowd, turns a darker shade of loud My brain picks apart and teases over all I might do wrong While someone dressed as Jesus is wailing Redemption Song Past the couple having dinner, both staring at their phones Past the broken-hearted cupids saying "How could I have known?" After he said "Don't be stupid, turned Houdini with the truth" Now she's banging back the bottle of one-hundred percent proof
Past the Robin Hood who's handing food out to a homeless girl Says, I remember how it feels to be forgotten by the world Then looks into the camera says "Poverty must end" Checks his Rolex and steps back into his new Mercedes-Benz Past the David Foster Wallace bandana in his hair Who mentions Dostoevsky when he's sure someone's can hear Then argues with the barman on existential themes And heads into the bathroom to Google what it means
Saying "I'm not shy I'm understated The Mona Lisa is overrated Stop trying to make me perfect Because being human is complicated"
I'm sorry buddy not tonight I'm sorry buddy not tonight
And back down to earth again Having beaten myself around the bend With means that lead to bitter ends I see your face less A gravity about you, something in the eyes One of those conversations where you don't need to try The game of who can tell the most earnest lie And my hopeless rumination clocks out for the night
Until you say take of your mask You reach out to find the clasp I say I kinda want you girl
Laughing you say ..........."Goodnight"

Kate Clover The Apocalypse Dream (2024)
The title track tto my fave album of 2024 does EVERYTHING an opener should:
Grabs you by the throat in its staccato opening chords and opening line *Here they come again, straight into your head"......insanely hooky chorus.....at 1:40 Clover lets out a sound that is a kind of cool "Huh" grunt before the solo - my favorite moment in Rock so far this year - a sort of Chrissie Hynde bad ass point of emphasis.......later an epic sounding brief musical outro into a sudden drop down ending.....
What a great song......great album too......

I'll probably post a ton of these, but this opener has always stunned me. Their best song and one of my favorite songs of the 00s.
