Leigh, Redgrave, Christie get my votes.
After them, I'd say Hepburn, Smith and Mirren.

I love a lot of those but Redgrave and Mirren are my faves - Christie probably 3rd. Redgrave didn't have the full film career she should have - she had to endure a quasi-blacklist - but she is utterly unique in how she evokes a role - she's like working a kind of magical aura rather than merely portraying a role. I am going to post this link again, but it's Pacino talking about Redgrave - and this is the most insightful thing I have ever heard one actor say about another - and this is a GOAT level male praising a GOAT level actress no less - @tyler is probably like, "wtf man your posting this again? The part just after you see Redgrave at about 10:00 - he talks about some actors giving you "exactly" what you want and he's very precise that is not Redgrave at all. Mirren who has had the kind of work arc that no other actress has had starting from almost soft-core erotic films and stage work to singular and dazzling and daring range in her own way - she plays period roles and doesn't even try an accent, I'd love her just for that! She has acted opposite the best male actors over generations - a lot of them - and she has never let the piece down - she always brings her A game when she has to.

Vanessa Redgrave, Vivien Leigh and Julie Andrews
Redgrave because she is hands down the greatest British Actress of all time.
Leigh, because she holds arguably the greatest screen performance by an actress of all time with Gone With The Wind.
Andrews is more of a specialist, but in what she specialises in (musicals), you could argue that she was the best ever.
All major stage performers as well, which helps.
Special mention to Tilda Swinton, who is probably the Best British Film Actress of the last two decades.

What a list Redgrave, Christie and I'll go with the lovely Deborah Kerr for the 3rd spot (surprising and haunting in The Innocents especially).

It's hard for me to really narrow it down, but Olivia Colman has two all-timers in film with Tyrannosaur and The Favourite, an all-timer on TV with Broadchurch (even when the writing went to shit, she definitely didn't), and she's shown such dizzying versatility and range that it's almost unbelievable how so much skill and talent can be found in one person. Definitely in the conversation for the best one working, at least.

Definitely Audrey and Deborah Kerr for me. Too many to choose from for the third spot.
Audrey obviously isn't as good of a dramatic actress as some of the people on the list but she was great at comedy and one of the best "movie star actors" ever. Genuinely iconic, not "iconic" the way it's tossed around now when Beyonce takes a selfie or something.
Kerr just has such a breadth of excellent performances I think it puts her ahead of everyone else. Black Narcissus, King and I, Heaven Knows Mr Allison, Affair to Remember, Separate Tables, The Innocents, and then Tea and Sympathy which I've talked about ad nauseam on here.

Boy, that's tough.
Went with Emma Thompson, Audrey Hepburn and Deborah Kerr for now.
Love Emma when she's on her best, just wished she had a better choice of projects lately. Deborah has plenty of great performances in different roles. Just love her in Night of the Iguana, Separate Tables and Heaven Knows Mr. Allison. Audrey might not have been the most versatile, but she's probably the #1 in terms of presence and charisma. And she's probably my most nominated of this list.
But Naomi Watts, Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith, Kate Winslet are up there as well.

1. Helen Mirren 2. Kate Winslet 3. Julie Christie 4. Audrey Hepburn 5. Naomi Watts
also love Rampling, Glenda Jackson, Maggie Smith....
Prime Suspect imo is an arguable #1 TV performance ever so that already puts Mirren near the top for me but then she has several other major great perfs. Across her work I find her to be bold, immediately engaging, precise and searching at the same time, and really good fun too.

Saoirse Ronan? British? Saoirse herself would probably strongly disagree with being on this list. Wars have been fought over this distinction.

I feel bad for Mirren sometimes. She's constantly being attacked by critics for how poor her filmography supposedly is. I see it all the time, but even yesterday they were still at it. Granted I don't catch everything she does, but a lot of her stuff looks good on paper. I don't think she's deliberately seeking to be in shit films.

To be honest, I think her filmography is actually kinda underrated. Sure she often picks films that feel like "intentional Oscar plays" (etc... Hitchcock), and her recent choices as of late haven't turned out so well, but you've got classic high British dramas ( The Madness of King George, The Queen - The Cook, The Thief & Her Lover - Very provocative too), epic fantasy ( Excalibur), well-constructed thrillers ( Eye in The Sky, The Debt), and even some sci-fi (the underrated 2010). There's a lot of different types of films to choose from, both past and present.

She's got some gems in her filmography of course, but when you have a 100+ movies, to some the good starts to feel insignificant if the majority of them are so-so or forgettable projects. I believe that's affected how some of these critics view Mirren. I agree that her filmography doesn't feel as bad as often claimed, but that's film twitter for ya.

Vivien Leigh Maggie Smith Kate Winslet
This was difficult because I love so many British actresses.
-Vivien Leigh didn't do that many films, but in her two important films, she gave iconic performances that beats most actresses. -Maggie Smith is an acting gem capable of witty, scene-stealing magnificence and subtle tenderness (see her final scene in A Room With a View) -Kate Winslet killed it right from Heavenly Creatures. The word passion comes to mind when I think of her acting style. I've loved it since I was a child.

1. Why is Lena Headey on this list? 2. I would encourage EVERYONE to vote for Saoirse Ronan. Let's bring a little unity back to this Kingdom on the cusp of being more divided than ever. 3. As this is in the movies section of the place does that mean we have to discount all their TV work, because if so then Helen 'small screen' Mirren doesn't get anywhere near this list. What's she got like one bad ass, undeniable, magical big screen role in The Last Station (I don't think I'm forgetting anything ) and that's pretty much it, give or take her Gosford Park one (unless we count her very different kind of magical in Savage Messiah) 4. Right, now that I'm done insulting people... Queen Viv is my favourite of all time, Winslet is my girl, and Rampling and Redgrave are GOAT contenders, so that'd be my quartet. Could never eliminate one of them.

She played The Queen in a movie nobody ever watched more than once, goddamnit!
