Really hard decision between Vance and Paulson for me. Then the next tier would be Schwimmer (who had some of the highest highs) and Brown. Finally Travolta and Gooding Jr, who I still liked, but nowhere as much as the others.
I only included the six that were Emmy nodded, so if you prefer someone other than them, click other and leave their name in the post.

Gotta be Paulson, but there were so many great performances in that cast.

Pretty much agree with what you said. Both Paulson and Vance are crazy good. Two of my favorites of the year. I really enjoyed Travolta as well. I'd rank them as:
01. Paulson 02. Vance 03. Brown 04. Travolta 05. Schwimmer 06. Gooding Jr. I didn't like him at all.

Vance is the MVP. But they are all pretty good, except for Travolta, who felt more like a caricature.

Brown for me, but it has got to be among the best ensembles in recent times. All 6 here were MVP worthy.

Weakest link : Cuba Gooding Jr ! The dude is a fine actor but he was so miscast there !

Courtney B. Vance is just god almighty over everyone. Sarah Paulson's characterization was all over the place, and she was downright boring in some episodes. Sterling K. Brown was very good, but kinda basic. Travolta was hilarious, but hardly in it down the stretch. Vance gave one of the two or three best performances of the year, and totally kicked the entire show into light speed.

They were all great, but it's Paulson for me.

I voted Vance, but obviously Paulson and Brown were great too. Travolta and Schwimmer were so fucking awful, which isn't a surprise.

Brown. Both he and Vance were mesmerizing. The rest of the ensemble were excessively average.

This is hard but I'm going to go ahead and pick Vance followed by Paulson. When you got used to him, Travolta was pretty good too. I can't wait to see the one on Katrina. I know a lot of people are saying, huh, why that but I trust the creators due to the awesomeness of this show.

Brown with a HM to Schwimmer
Everyone killed it in fairness.

Brown, he was fantastic, and practically stole the show at points, though everyone was great.
