I wasn’t a huge fan of the film, but I have to admit that the marketing so far has been incredible.

Could very well throw a wrench into the race if BAFTA goes for her, as McDormand and Davis are both very recent winners there and Mulligan (who won in 2009) has been off the grid for a while and she has the hometown advantage (and unlike Kirby, no Netflix stigma). The thing is, BAFTA more and more seem to just be 'going with the flow'. They've gone with the frontrunner (and coincidentally eventual Oscar winner) in Lead Actress every year since 2013, except for when they awarded Colman, who was right in the hunt anyway.

Things are probably going to be worse in December, not better.

Has anyone been following the absolute bullshit going on, pertaining to that one Variety review. ... No? I'm terrible at explaining things, but I'll try my best. Last April, a writer for Variety said in their review of the film that Carey Mulligan isn't attractive enough for the role of Cassie and likened her performance to 'bad drag'. A couple of months ago Mulligan called out the review and Variety issued an apology, and so we thought that would be the last of that. But now a shit ton of critics, some top tier ones too like Robbie Colin and Justin Chang, are bitching and moaning on Twitter about 'free speech' and how the Variety writer is getting 'thrown under the bus'. They're all pretty much banding together to defend this one misogynistic douche because he's a 'hardworking freelancer who has to write a lot of articles. Robbie Colin even went as far to say that Mulligan calling the review out is just part of her campaign process. Unsurprisingly, critics are the ones with incredibly thin skin. If you feel like doing a bit of reading, pretty much every bit of information on the subject is in this AwardsWorthy thread (From the page I've linked onwards)

Holy shit, are these people stupid (and not just because of calling Carey Mulligan ugly. Really?).

For those of you who've seen the movie, what are your thoughts? My thoughts are that Mulligan's looks are completely irrelevant to the film and her character/performance and it's a completely idiotic and sexist thing to even mention.

The way so many critics I enjoyed and respected are behaving is the truest mob-mentality. What a shitshow, and one of them even implied Mulligan (one of the most reserved and low-profile actresses out there) was inciting this for an Oscar campaign. She deserved better.

For those of you who've seen the movie, what are your thoughts? On what? You don't have to have seen the film to know that it's just a blatantly misogynistic thing to say.
