Welcome to the Movie Awards Redux Past Awards for 2005.
I was initially thinking about taking a break for the holiday season, but figured it may be better just to get this out now. The deadline, though, is significantly extended.
The following categories will have up to 7 nominees:
Best Picture Best Director Best Actor Best Actress Best Supporting Actor Best Supporting Actress Best Original Screenplay Best Adapted Screenplay
The following categories will have up to 5 nominees:
Best Ensemble Cast Best Cinematography Best Production Design Best Costume Design Best Makeup and Hair-styling Best Stunt, Fight and Dance Choreography Best Visual Effects Best Editing Best Sound Mixing Best Sound Editing Best Original Score Best Original Song
Please submit ranked ballots to me. You can submit ballots with less than the category's number or without certain categories other than the top 8.
The top 8 categories will be scored thus:
1. 5 points 2. 4 points 3. 3 points 4. 2 points 5. 1 point 6. 1 point 7. 1 point
You can submit just 5 if you'd like and your top choice will still get the full points. Less than 5 and it will count for fewer points.
The eligibility period will be for the first theatrical release in the film's country (or one of its countries) of origin. Look on IMDb for that information.
The voting period will be until March 11th at 11:59pm PST.
You can post any FYCs in this thread.

Just so there's no confusion, we'll have a list of films whose eligibility might be unclear. If you know of any other films that might cause confusion, let me know so I can add it to the list.
These films are eligible this year:
Crash The Descent Mysterious Skin Speak
These films are not eligible this year:
Brick Hard Candy Thank You for Smoking

I thought this was a terrible year, but there is actually a lot of solid stuff that nobody ever appreciates. Like, stuff rated below 3.0 average on Letterboxd. Do people really hate In Her Shoes that much? Hoodwinked is so much fun! Does anyone remember Cate Blanchett's best performance in Little Fish? Does anyone remember the heartwarming joy that was Lassie? Sky High ABSOLUTELY NEEDS a screenplay nod, people!
Here's a few FYCs from me:
Bashing Best actress - Fusako Urabe
Broken Flowers Best actor - Bill Murray Best original screenplay
Empire Falls Best picture Best actor - Ed Harris Best supporting actor - Paul Newman Best supporting actress - Danielle Panabaker Best supporting actress - Estelle Parsons Best ensemble Best adapted screenplay
Hoodwinked! Best adapted(?) screenplay
In Her Shoes Best director - Curtis Hanson Best actress - Toni Collette Best original screenplay
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Best Picture Best adapted screenplay
Lassie Best ensemble
Little Fish Best actress - Cate Blanchett
The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio Best ensemble
Proof Best supporting actress - Hope Davis Best adapted screenplay
Red Eye Best picture Best director - Wes Craven Best actor - Cillian Murphy Best actress - Rachel McAdams Best original screenplay Best editing
Sky High Best picture Best original screenplay
The Upside of Anger Best picture Best actress - Joan Allen Best original screenplay

We are counting Empire Falls as a movie, right? Technically, it aired over two nights on HBO, but it was envisioned as a movie and sold as one before HBO decided that over three hours was too much for original programming, IIRC. I know that I watched it over the course of one night.

FYCKiss Kiss Bang Bang in all eligible categories...specifically Original Screenplay, Actor & Supporting Actor It's actually based on a novel. Hmm... learn something new everyday. Guess I should've known that considering the story involving those "Johnny Gossemer" books. Well, then, Adapted it is!

Now that the holidays are over, it's time to take this off the back-burner. I know some people have said that they don't really have lineups going back this far, well now's your chance to build them. Most ballots are made up of around 35 films, less if you don't do every category. You've got a little over 2 months, and that can be extended, to see what films you need to beef up those lineups. Now no one expects you to see every movie released in a given year, but I'm sure you know your tastes well enough to know what to prioritize.

my watchlist: The Child In Her Shoes Jarhead Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Memoirs of a Geisha Mr. & Mrs. Smith The New World Three Burials The Upside of Anger The Child - L'enfant, right? I'm a huge HUGE Dardenne fan, but this is the one that didn't work for me. It has everything that makes their work great, with one major problem: they finally went too far. They made a character so unlikable that I couldn't get behind him. They're masters of generating empathy for unlikable characters, but I couldn't do it this time. In Her Shoes - Far more of a hard hitting drama than the romantic comedy it's advertised as, so be aware of that. Toni Collette is at a career best imho. There's one scene of her reading an erotic novel that is one of the funniest and touching scenes of 2005. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - You haven't seen this? Oh. Oooooh boy. Well, if this doesn't get a BP nod, this board should just delete itself. Memoirs of a Geisha - A complete misfire from beginning to end. Can't remember it too well, just that it was a terrible bore. Mr. & Mrs. Smith - This kind of comedy doesn't do it for me, but other people may enjoy it more. The New World - It's flowy modern Malick. Take that as you will. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada - Can't remember it very well. I didn't like it when I was younger, but I was young and stupid then. The Upside of Anger - My favorite of the year, but I'm likely alone in that (also a crappy year, so this isn't a ringing endorsement). It's a series of vignettes without any real plot, but the character dynamics are real. I know these people. My mother, my brother, my sister, they're all here. The arguments, the jokes, the awful, stinging words that can ruin a relationship ("You might be just in time to pull my head out of the oven" is the sort of thing I could hear my mom saying after an argument... hell, she's said practically the same thing many times). The direction is kind of pedestrian, but the heart is gold. Oh, and Joan Allen and Kevin Costner play drunk better than anyone I can recall.

so Memoirs of a Geisha...
I won't recommend anyone go see it because it sucks but for those who already have (you know who you are): you better show up for Colleen Atwood and Dion Beebe.

The Proposition was exactly what I feared it would be, only more so. Wow, a dark and gritty, brutally violent western, like we've never seen one of those before... I'm not the biggest fan of The Searchers, but at least it could get some of the same points across without looking like The Passion of the Christ. Good heavens.

Can we get Crash in for BP? Because (a.) it deserves a nod in this weak year, and (b.) the meltdown would be wonderful to see.
