- Do you think "The Winds of Winter" will be published this year?
- If no, do you think it will ever be published?
- Do you think you will re-read "A Dance with Dragons" before starting on the new book, should it be published?
- Also, lets vote above for our favourite of the five books so far.
Personally, I don't think it'll come out this year and I'm starting to doubt it ever will. I hope I'm wrong on the first front and really hope I'm wrong on the second. I just have this feeling that Martin has dug himself into a literary hole so deep and complex that he'll never be quite happy with how to finish the story, and if the last book is anything to go by, he could still make it worse with the sixth. Also, the man is not far off of 70 and he doesn't exactly look like the healthiest chap in the world. He may well just run out out time (harsh and morbid thought I know). All that aside though, hopefully I'm totally wrong and it'll come out soon. Should that be the case, I think, as much as it'll be a slog, because it was the first time; I will re-read "A Dance with Dragons". I feel like I still have a decent memory of how things ended for everyone, but I think a full refresher course will be the order of the day...if only it could be read in a day. Anyway, A Storm of Swords is by far my favourite so far, and one of my favourite books in general.

I hate to say it, but Winds of Winter ain't happening. I'd love to be wrong. I'd also love to see George dig himself out of the hole he dug with the shitstorm of A Dance with Dragons.
Anyway, unpopular opinion right here: My favorite is A Feast for Crows. I loved all of the new characters, and found their stories to be far more interesting than the crappy stuff we got with the established characters in Dance. And the stuff with Jaime and Brienne was the most emotionally moving stuff in the whole series.

I think The Winds of Winter is happening, but I think that'll be it. I feel like his drive to finish the series is waning and he's created far too many disparate plotlines to wrap up. I do hope that he's been writing in such a way as to tie up all character threads rather than writing sequentially (i.e. he writes every Cersei chapter until the very end of her role in the last book, then moves to Arya, etc.).

I'm a huge fan.
I remember being confident in saying The Winds of Winter would come out in 2014. So I have no thoughts on any release date.
I'd rank the series like this -
1. A Storm of Swords 2. A Game of Thrones 3. A Clash of Kings 4. A Dance with Dragons 5. A Feast for Crows

A Feast For Crows is my favorite of the series. I like its slow pace and I think it is the book that delves into the psyche of it's characters most effectively. As for The Winds Of Winter, I don't think it will be released this year and I doubt it would be released anytime soon. After the bloated mess that was A Dance With Dragons I don't think G. R. R. Martin has thought of an ending that would satisfy him. In A Dance With Dragons it didn't seem like the writer was confident on how his story was unfolding.

Currently re-reading them, but I rank them:
1. A Storm of Swords 2. A Clash of Kings 3. A Feast for Crows 4. A Game of Thrones 5. A Dance with Dragons
As for the release of the Winds of Winter, I'm hoping it'll be released sometime this year, though I'm not optimistic. I remember around last year at this time I was told it would be released in the summer... and here we are. At least I have time to finish my entire re-read before it comes out.

I've started to re-read the whole thing now. I'm halfway through 'A Game of Thrones', and although I only read for 30-40 minutes a day total (traveling to and from work), I have no doubt I will have time to read all 5 of them again before we even get a whiff of 6.

Okay so I've made it through the great books and I'm about 100ish pages into A Feast for Crows, or I'm into the rough end of A Song of Ice and Fire as I tend to think of it. Thinking back to my first read of the 4th & 5th books, I remember feeling like A Feast for Crows was dull, but still a quite decent book, and that it was A Dance with Dragons when the series went off the rails. It'll be interesting to see if I feel the same this time. So far, the worst moment has been remembering just how Greyjoy focused it's all about to get for a while; as Theon / Reek aside, I honestly couldn't give a shit about any of them (just a sample there of how highbrow my literary criticism can get ). Seriously though, those early, back to back Prophet and Captain of the Guards chapters might be were the series tipped into the realms of shark jumping, even if it didn't officially happen until A Dance with Dragons.

I go back and forth over whether I dislike the Dorne stuff or the Ironborn stuff more, but I find Euron such an intolerable character, that I think he tips it for the Ironborn. The only defense I can offer book Euron, is that he's not half as bad as TV Euron. Annoyingly (TV wise), the one Greyjoy brother from the books that I don't outright hate is Victarion, the one they went and bloody cut from TV. I'm hoping I might like reading the Greyjoy chapters more the second time around, but I'm not holding my breath.

He had a badass intro on the bridge, but almost everything after that has been so underwhelming. I don't blame the actor, but it's clear that they aren't sure what to do with Euron because the books are setting him up as the big (human) bad, but by the time he appears in the show, things are winding down to their conclusion. I will say the scene where the Greyjoys ambush the Targaryen fleet was amazing, and that proved that Asbaek could be an incredible Euron if they had a.) introduced him early, and b.) made him more of a monstrous psycho rather than an edgelord.

The same here. I think he's doing the best he can with a poorly adapted character. I guess the issue, to me at least, is that he's coming off as a poor mans Ramsay Bolton. As you say, it's too late in that day to introduce another monster of sorts to the show, especially one who cant even match Joffrey, never mind Ramsay.

I always said that they should've introduced Euron back in Season 3. Have Balon Greyjoy die during the War of the Five Kings as he does in the books, and always have Euron as an omnipresent character who we may not see often, but we hear about. That way, you can build Euron up over time and he can fill the vacuum left by Joffrey and Ramsay. But what makes Euron so terrifying is what he does with his own family, and one need only read Aeron's chapters (especially the preview chapter for The Winds of Winter) to know that he's not just a clone of Ramsay: he's an even more monstrous character.

Victarion might be my favorite character in the entire series, and Feast for Crows is very underrated imo.

Victarion might be my favorite character in the entire series, and Feast for Crows is very underrated imo. Victarion is great! We were robbed of having Rome's Ray Stevenson play the Iron Captain. My personal casting of Euron, by the by, was David O'Hara. Imagine his unhinged Braveheart performance coupled with Euron's mania.

I like the Ironborn and Dornish stuff a lot in the books, although my favorite part of AFFC was Jaime's story. I guess the one chapter in Dorne that struck me as a little odd was that one from Oakheart's POV - to this day I think the only reason this wasn't from Arianne's perspective was because GRRM liked the "Soiled Knight" chapter title. But yeah, the backlash these two story lines get is pretty silly for the most part. I think people would look on them a lot more favorably if The Winds of Winter was out so they'd be able to see how they fit into the endgame of the story. I don't even know what to say about the show's depiction of the Iron Islands (post Season 2, it was fine there) and Dorne. Not only does it fail completely as an adaptation but it's pretty terrible even in the context of the show itself, filled to the brim with inconsistencies and cringe-worthy writing.

Fire and BloodSo I am interested in reading this for sure, but I'm genuinely getting irked with this guy now. I want this series done with before it's too late.

So I've finished A Feast for Crows and it was so much better the second time around. I really liked the Dornish stuff, and what it culminated to at this point. I still didn't care too much for the Iron Born stuff, I never will I think. The Sam chapters were stronger than I remember too. The Cersei, Jame and Brienne journeys are the real highlights of this book. Lady Stoneheart though, fuck off! I like the Arya and Sansa stuff well enough, even if the chapters themselves aren't great to read. I especially like were the Sansa / Littlefinger story ends, and the big revelation of his complex plan of who to marry her off to. As the Sansa story on TV went so very different to the books at this point, I had kinda forgotten most where she was book wise, so it was almost like reading it for the first time again. Anyways, on to A Dance with Dragons now. So many Dani chapters, and Tyrion whining about where whores go to look forward to....lucky me

Lady Stoneheart though, fuck off! Thank you. Hated it the first go around, and it was just as lame this time. I can forgive the TV show the worst of its crimes, as it didn't include this Stoneheart nonsense.

Have to agree with you guys on Stoneheart. It's just dumb, honestly. And kind of tarnishes the best thing Martin ever wrote.
A Feast for Crows is still the weakest book for me. ADWD has lower lows, but IMO it also has much higher highs. Neither are on par with the first three though regardless.

So, I'm done with book one of A Dance with Dragons, and it really isn't nearly as bad as I remember it so far, not even close. I dare say I'm even enjoying it. The Tyrion stuff was a lot more interesting the second time around. I also like the Jon of the books so much more than the insipid, watered down 'nice-guy' the show turned him into. I do feel like the worst of the Dani stuff is to come in the next half, but I'll cope. She isn't as intolerable as I remember her on first reading. Also, I'm looking forward to re-reading the last of the Cersei stuff so far. The weakest part of book five so far on re-read has been the Quentyn Martell stuff. I know it'll probably serve a purpose in the larger scheme of things, in future books ( , future books), but very much like the Greyjoy brothers, I just don't give a shit. The highlight so far is the reek stuff, and the chapter The Prince of Winterfell has to be in contention for chapter of the series.

With the announcement to be made in April 1st.

Theon's story in ADWD is easily the highlight of the book for me, and that's really saying something considering how good the stuff with Davos and Bran was. It's intense, emotional, and masterfully conveys a lot of the core themes of A Song of Ice and Fire. I love the backdrop too, Winterfell taken over by enemies. Enemies that are falling apart due to paranoia and legitimate conspiracies. Quentyn on the other hand is maybe the poorest thing Martin has written yet. It's exactly the sort of thing that should have been more condensed or done completely differently if these last two books were competently edited. Tyrion's chapters aren't bad (in fact I love the stuff with Young Griff's crew) but not nearly enough happens in them for one of the main characters in Book 5 of 7. His story just kind of stagnates after a certain point and then ends on an odd note, and I don't mean that in a good way. I think Winds would be a lot easier for Martin to write if more stuff actually happened in the last book, because as it currently stands this next one is going to have be even faster paced than Storm if there's any hope at all of him finishing by Book 7.
