Guys, I know I am 10 years late but I am obsessed with this show. I have just finished the fifth season and it's such an endearing little show with so many fun performances. And such great characters - KEVIN tho!! <3 What do you think of it? Fav characters? Fav performances? Does it hold up once Michael leaves? And I can't be the only one who thinks Jenna Fischer == Amy Adams? Their voice, their acting, everything is so similar. I love her!

I actually kinda hate it. I found Michael insufferable to the point of unwatchability, Jim and Pam are the absolute worst once they get together, and I never found Dwight funny. The supporting ensemble, though, is on fire. Creed for life!

I think it's a pretty funny, enjoyable show. It goes downhill after Season 5 for me but I didn't think any of it was bad.
Favorite characters were Ryan, Andy, and Kevin. Toby was hilarious too. DOES ANYONE HAVE A CAMERA HERE

For a stretch it balanced comedy and drama (usually Jim-Pam) better than any American (non-cable) TV show since M*A*S*H at least - maybe any show ever - season 2-Michael leaving (season 7?) are its peak especially 2-5 and I don't think it ever regained its footing after Michael leaves but even then it had some left-field moments.
It's very hard to do what that show did - take a great existing show like the BBC version and carve a memorable group of characters from it. It's very very hard.
That's what she said.

It's the show I have on in the background whenever I'm doing anything around the house. Still love it death, but the more I watch I just think Jim is a ginormous, manipulative ass. A lot of the jokes in the interview sections are create just for meme culture. However, I Quote it on an hourly basis. I've probably gone through it all 7 or 8 times. Yes, it drops pretty drastically once Michael leaves, but after has some brilliant moments as well. I still think if you take each episode in a vacuum it's brilliant, but it lacks a cohesive, interesting throughline story-wise.
But most of those complaints while valid, wouldn't be complaints if i just saw the show once.

It's overrated, but still enjoyable. I never cared for the Jim/Pam relationship. The best relationship on the show for my money was definitely Michael/Holly...with the episode "Garage Sale" being a particular highlight. Which, come to think of it, might even be my favorite episode of the entire series. And to echo earlier comments - the supporting cast is more or less what keeps the series going... they are consistently funny from episode to episode and more often than not their storylines were more interesting.
All-in-all I like the show (and am actually kinda itching to rewatch it) but I don't believe it deserves what seems to be near unanimous praise and a place among the best shows of all-time.

GOAT level sitcom. Definitely suffers and takes big dip in quality after Steve Carrel leaves but phenomenal and hilarious up until then.

I still love it. It's television comfort food for the most part. Has some stellar highs and some pretty dismal lows, but overall I always enjoy the experience. I do agree that Jim and Pam got really, really fucking tiring the more it went on.
That said, though, fuck Scott's Tots. So fucking cringe and awkward, I hate it.

I like it a lot until Andy Bernard's character gets more and more of the focus...and then of course, the show turned entirely to shit once Michael Scott left. It's the easy answer, but really, the show should have wrapped up after that.

I loved it but it's not a show that I'd be in a rush to sit back and rewatch constantly like It's Always Sunny or Rick and Morty.

I couldn’t laugh at the kids not getting their money for college. Other than that I agree with those that praised the supporting cast. They’re the best part of it for me especially on rewatch. Also sort of glad to see how public opinion has shifted on Jim and the Jim and Pam relationship. I admit when I first watched I thought he was charming and wanted them to get together, but over time I found Jim to be a jerk and found myself not caring anymore about Jim and Pam’s relationship. I’m just glad Karen and Roy dodged big bullets there, and I didn’t even like Roy at all.

I’m just glad Karen and Roy dodged big bullets there, and I didn’t even like Roy at all. I wouldn’t go so far as to say Jim was a jerk. He was just kind of lame, and the way he thought he was above dressing up for Halloween and stuff made him come off as secretly insecure. Idris Elba relentlessly giving him a hard time was one of the funnier parts of the show to me.

I tend to agree with the "Jim is kind of a dick" line of thinking, at least in certain aspects of his character. Especially in the way that he broke up with women (the Amy Adams character in the early part of the show, and then Karen) in his pursuit of Pam.

Not a fan of these "Jim is a dick" takes.

Finally finished watching it and my life has no purpose now. Anyway, as much as I hated season 8 even if Wilson and Spader tried their best to save it, I am absolutely in the love train for this show. Super quirky characters who can be both irritating yet very lovable and some really fun performances esp Carell and Wilson. I'm so gonna miss this show.
Ill rank the performances : Rainn Wilson! So awesome. I loved loved Dwight. Steve Carell Creed Bratton Jenna Fischer (heart of the show) Brian B Angela Kinsey
But they are all so amazing! ❤️

I'm even later than the OP in catching up with this, but I'm getting there (watching season 5 right now, the last one I saw was the one in which Holly left- which was just a very stupid decision).
It's not really the greatest show of all time by any means (and from what I hear, it gets worse later on)- the insistence on cringe humor (particularly involving Michael) is too much and they push the envelope too much in Michael's ineptitude to the point is just not believable he wasn't fired long ago and/or half the office didn't quit, plus too much focus in romance at times- but it's more often than not funny and at times just hilarious.
Oh, and I agree that Creed is objectively the best.

So, I've continued to binge this, to the point I'm in season 8 now, but I'm not sure I'll continue because this Nellie business is probably the single dumbest plot I've ever seen on a television show. If someone tells me this gets solved quickly or the show gets much better, I'll continue, but I've been having the urge to fastforward it every second she appears and makes everyone's IQ drop 90 points.

Yeah I didn't really care for Nellie in season 8, but I actually found her to be more funny in the final season. Though if you stop now, it's no great loss considering the last 2 seasons are objectively the weakest of the series.

Yeah, the last two seasons are pretty boring overall but still has some gems. Spader is really cool and if you want to stop, you can. But do watch the wonderful finale. I cried in some scenes. Ended it on a high note for me❤️

Yeah I didn't really care for Nellie in season 8, but I actually found her to be more funny in the final season. Though if you stop now, it's no great loss considering the last 2 seasons are objectively the weakest of the series. It's not that the character is so stupid and dull, although she is, but the way she gets Andy's job really is the most stupid development I've ever seen in a TV show- and not only it's pretty terrible in itself, but when Lieberstein essentially breaks the fourth wall (during that meeting in "Angry Andy") to admit "yeah, I know this sucks" to a development he decided himself as showrunner, I nearly did to my computer what Andy did to that wall.
Reading what was written at the time, seems like they were in love with Tate and her character and always had her in mind, but poor fan reaction, combined with the positive one to California and scheduling conflicts made them go to Spader and Helms instead, but when she became available, they dropped all logic to bring her in and make it fit. Seems pretty clear that California essentially became a different character once he became a regular, and they had no idea what to do with him, and rather than deal with a possibly new idea (a boss who's essentially a highly intelligent psychopath and/or a con artist), they wanted her to be a dumber, British version of Michael, without any of his redeeming qualities.
Mind you, there were already problems with the show before season 8 that are the ones that made it impossible for the Office to, while being very good, be up there with the best of the best, specially the way the show developed new ideas for the characters only to drop them suddenly to return to the status quo- for example, I said removing Holly from the show was a terrible idea at the time and the next seasons proved it right, because the showrunners were too lazy to deal with a Michael who's happy and slowly getting more mature so they could having him do stuff like banging Pam's mom instead, and then when Carell decided to leave they had to cram 3 seasons worth of development in a few episodes. But there were other examples of this- hell, Nellie's own introduction is quite arguably a way of trying to get a new Michael rather than develop a new dynamic.
Also, the flanderization of some characters, which is common in comedy shows, was really seen there with some characters- Kevin and Dwight specially.
That said, the show never stopped being funny, and often hilarious, but they seemingly stopped being able to tell good stories- the openings and the endings were almost always pretty good.
