He was never honestly that zeitgeisty of a star. Only movies he led that made $100m domestic were Batman & Robin (a major franchise hitting its nadir), The Perfect Storm (a disaster movie he's not on the poster for), and the Oceans movies (where the whole draw is how stacked the casts are so idk how much we can put that on him). He felt omnipresent because he's very good at working the media circuit and has made a lot of friends in the industry, but on its face he's never been that much of a draw. He did his business with mid-budget, prestige-y studio movies that have been largely squeezed out by smaller indie films getting more awards traction and studios electing to go bigger with their budgets. Also doesn't help that he insists on directing more despite regressing considerably in that area since Good Night, and Good Luck.

He really just needs to wait for the next Coen Brothers or Soderbergh movie. I mean he won his Oscar for a Soderbergh-lite film anyhow... they've worked together like a dozen times... JUST DO IT CLOONEY! And you can trust me, I'm some random dude on the internet.
Plus, NFL reddit is crazy right now so I need to voice my opinion on something I cannot control... and I swear to god, if the Giants take Smith, I'm going to burn a lot of storefronts...

He really just needs to wait for the next Coen Brothers or Soderbergh movie. Or just any good actor's director really. I think his career best performance are The Descendants and Up in the Air personally, and was nominated for an Oscar for them both. I think if he stops directing (especially directing himself) or starring for other actors-turned-directors like Jodie Foster, I don't see why he couldn't back. He's currently directing The Tender Bar starring Ben Affleck so we'll see how that goes...

I mean, does he even care? Clearly, he doesn't. He's as delusional as Sean Penn in certain ways.

Thing is, he should stop directing himself.
