It's early, I know, but still - what do you think will be the five picks in this category this year?
I'm thinking:
- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - Lots of people have talked about the film's transportive qualities, especially about the turning the clock back on Hollywood Boulevard. The campaign will definitely be strong and that element will be heavily emphasized. QT's movies haven't been nominated here but this one is sure to break that 'tradition'. - Jojo Rabbit - WW2 but stylized in the Wes Anderson-y kinda style - should be in. - 1917 - WW1, big name designer, should be a big tech contender... - Ad Astra - Space movies have done really well here this decade so even though James Gray's Oscar record is so far nonexistent, I think this movie will be here. - Little Women - Classy period BP nominee is always good to go here.

Well, I already said "scope" is the theme of the year and this is definitely The Irishman in at least this respect - the film may not be great but 320 scenes, 117 locations it's just going to dwarf everything in this category.
Kent Jones the director of the NYFF is on a podcast today where he talks about the detail in the film (he calls it a "magnificent piece of work" - take that with a grain of salt.....) and you can just tell that these kind of aspects are going to be no-brainers for a film like this.

If I had to take a stab right now:
Ad Astra Jojo Rabbit Joker Motherless Brooklyn (feels like the sort of flashy, non-BP thing they'd go for) Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood
Although I could definitely see Little Women, The Irishman and even The Lighthouse getting in with the right campaigns.

To be totally fair, Kent Jones is kinda buddy buddy with Marty so even though his comments are certainly exciting and arousing, that aspect still has to be kept in mind. "The Irishman" seems like it should have a good shot here with the different time periods and its sheer size...But the Academy has foolishly failed to show appreciation for his gangster movies in this category before. Lord knows "Casino" should've won the damn thing. But yeah, having more of a historical scope as a pull will definitely help it here.

1917 Cats The Irishman Little Women Once Upon A Time In Hollywood*** Oh yes, we can’t forget Cats. Shit, goddamn Cats slipped my mind...At this time I'm not seeing any nods for it BUT this category is definitely the one in which it has the best chance.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 1917 Cats Little Women Harriet - even with the tepid reviews out of TIFF this always looked like a tech player to me and that hasn't changed. Reviews don't matter so much in these fields.
