* Do people - in general - really need to know who "Ezra Miller" is more than the general population needs to know who "The Speedways" are? I'm going to say if you can only know one, Ezra's not really the one to give af about....
* Every year around this time I'm pretty much ready for Summer to end, grow a beard, and football / hockey seasons tbh

Beverly Hills 90210 (Season 6. 1995) This is so adorable. This show has the same clock I'm currently using in my room right now. 90s model clock. That's adorable. Well actually it's my mom's clock, I'm just borrowing it. I just didn't know it was that ancient.

Somebody needs to compile all of Anthony Hopkins' instagram posts and other social media and build a movie around an alien invasion as seen through the eyes of Anthony Hopkins but he's just too crazy to understand what is happening and everyone is like "TONY THE WORLD IS ENDING" and he's just jamming to metal music and talking to the Easter Bunny

* If Criterion releases were indicative of an actor or director's depth of filmography - relative to their rivals anyway - Whit Stillman would be Paul Thomas Anderson and Denzel Washington would be Jack Nicholson but they are obviously not even close to either's filmography.
* The constant barrage of "ifs" when you watch news is maddening and also not news - i.e. Trump MAY go to jail, Liz Cheyney MAY run for President, Djokovic COULD play at the US Open.... none of that is news.....it would be news when any of it actually happens - the actual news content you hear on the news is pretty low.....
* The day when the "heavy" Summer air lifts - when the humidity lifts - and you know it will not return for ~ 6 months or more is the best day of each year - and I love a lot about Summer .........but everything is better on that first day when you have to zip up your jacket.......where I live anyway.....

True. PTA isn't fit to lick Whit Stillman's boots.

I find Stillman more interesting than PTA too.
Metropolitan > There Will Be Blood. Metropolitan feels like it's adapted from a superior source than There Will Be Blood. The Last Days of Disco is not as good as Metropolitan, but it's still nostalgic and the depicted bygone era is really sweet. And I'd definitely take it over Inherent Vice or Magnolia. Besides, Stillman movies doesn't remind you of anyone else's. Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and There Will Be Blood is heavily based on Scorsese, Altman, and Kubrick. I definitely prefer the more original filmmaker.

Yeah I like Stillman too - but not (nearly) as much - but the point there was just that for the most part MAR can't (ever, it's quite boring actually) separate the actors and directors that they like in their worlds with the bigger world........outside of themselves. But yeah I totally should have just used - David Mamet (or somebody else) - in my example instead of Stillman though....... because Stilman fans are pretty committed to his cult.......... that's totally true ....... and probably because he is pretty singular

PTA is a major filmmaker that people really care about. However, Criterion does try to boost the awareness of people like Stillman, when PTA doesn't really need it. I think that is the major reason they released his 90s movies: they had a Stillman nerd on staff that said "nobody knows this guy and he's pretty great." With their recent acquisitions, they seem to be pushing hard at resurrecting movies that were passed over at the time or have been completely forgotten. Especially the push of black filmmakers that mostly didn't have major distributors or otherwise didn't make a dent in history. But they've always done this, and Stillman is one example. Sometimes they just want to make somebody happen - and in the case of Stillman, I think they succeeded.

All my male friends in the last 4 decades were eldest brothers, some of them had more than 2 siblings. Even my husband has a brother who is 12 years younger than him.

In Switzerland, before the amendment of the Civil Code of 1988, a married woman had to take care of the family and needed the consent of her husband (or of the judge) to have a job outside the family.

That's shocking! I guess feminism was never big in Switzerland? Did all those rich trophy wives never think of unionizing themselves?

Just think that women in public jobs (like teachers) were almost obliged to resign when they got married because they shouldn't need a salary anymore. They had to justify in front of a judge why their income was necessary for their family. Women couldn't vote in some of the Swiss states before 1991. And it's peculiar how some of them were disappointed when the Confederation was deciding to allow women to vote and they wrote their parliament members, why men don't want to do their duty and deal with political issues by themselves? Have they become weak?

So I don’t know why, when people talk about a movie ms visual effects, that they insist on comparing it to a video game. Like this continues to be a line that people parrot without any originality, without any real context either.
Like… What is it even supposed to mean?
Is it supposed to be saying that the visuals are weak? If that’s the case, have those critics *played* or *seen* video games recently? I can tell you those are getting vivid and photorealistic in their own right. Plus, video games don’t always strive for 1:1 photorealism based on their style, so it makes even less sense to me.
But if not that, is like a back-handed statement? Is the implication to say that video games are *beneath* film, and beneath critics? One, that sounds like an arrogant statement to make, and two, I think it shows some revealing elitism. As if they’re unwilling to ever acknowledge games in a legitimate fashion, or as capable of being genuinely moving (I love Roger Ebert to death, but I will never agree with his stance on games as art).
So yeah, that’s what’s on my mind.

Did you read the article? What if parents are older than 18 but younger than 21? I guess some 20 yo people have 5 yo children who want to watch animated movies for instance. Or teenagers who go to the theater with elder siblings. I don't get why adults older than 18 but younger than 21 are considered lesser people.

I want sex to be fun again in the movies. Is it too much to ask for equal opportunity objectification, depicting sex as a consensual activity that is actually enjoyable and funny and not something that will get both religious prudes and SJW prudes agreeing that we should remove forever because it offends someone?
I want Barbarella to come back. I want It's Raining Men to come back. I want to see people loving lovemaking.
No, I'm not horny. I just watched this music video and had such a big grin on my face and I'm hurt that we can't allow ourselves to have fun in the same way anymore:
Can film culture go back to presenting this as something wonderful again? Or has that ship sailed?

Overall, glad I got to go see this with friends on a holiday weekend & in a packed theater. Definitely the way to enjoy these things, and I hope they keep making 'em. Funny, I keep hoping that Hollywood will be destroyed in a giant fireball so that competent writers can get jobs again No, I haven't seen Glass Onion. The first movie was miserable enough, why would I wish to suffer through another one. If Rian Johnson left the franchise, I could conceivably see myself coming back for more goofy Daniel Craig goodness, but he wasn't able to save the first movie from Johnson's stupidity, just as nobody could save TLJ from his fucking hack writing. It wouldn't be a Martin Stett post on a modern blockbuster without forcing in a rabid hatred of Rian Johnson, Bad Robot and/or the MCU, now would it?
