Good numbers for Good Boys. Great to see an original comedy doing well at all.
Not so good for 47 Meters Down.

Good Boys had a really solid opening weekend. As for the rest of the new openers, EUGH!!!! Not so great. That makes me so sad that Blinded by the Light couldn't even make it into the top 10 even over the awful Where'd You Go, Bernadette. It just had a lot of heart that I think it would be hard for anyone not to enjoy it even if they're not a Springsteen fan; although, it probably helps to be.

The movie just got lost in the shuffle of a weak August weekend that just happened to have a lot of new releases. Despite fairly good reviews, WB didn't market it very well either, that and while Springsteen is a very popular name, when compared to other recent musicals like Yesterday, and Rocketman it just didn't seem as flashy, or "in your face". It's a real shame too, it seemed like it was the best of the new releases. I'd like to see it, but it's not at my local theater, instead I saw Good Boys, which I enjoyed a lot more then I expected to.

Yes, I didn't see any marketing for Blinded by the Light at all except for the trailer when I saw Rocketman and Yesterday lol. I saw Good Boys last night, and I really enjoyed it too. I think the responsive crowd helped, but it was very funny and I think captured that age well where the kids sort of know adult stuff but are still very much kids. Plus, the three leads were pretty good. I was worried that they might annoy me a little based on the trailers for it because sometimes I can only take so much of smart aleck kid characters, but they all did well. Jacob Tremblay of course is the solid veteran so made sense to make him the lead. Brady Noon had a great voice, and I was taken by surprise by how good it was at first. I thought Keith L. Williams was the scene stealer though. I definitely related to him about the no grilled cheese .

It's basically Superbad with preteens, and a lot more wrong in conception as a result, but I laughed a lot more then I expected to. The boys had great chemistry between each other, and they were good actors especially Jacob Tremblay, who made sense cast as the "reasonable leader". There were a lot of funny scenes, but I especially loved the scene with the cop, that dude just clearly wanted to get his stuff, and but the boys kept ruining his day, by revealing everything they had done that they considered illegal, and then they proceeded to lock him in the store. Hysterical!

The weekend estimates are out and basically all the new releases apart from "Good Boys" tanked. Meanwhile, "Once Upon a Time..." loses a THOUSAND fucking screens because of this swarm of new garbage and still holds up excellently. Such a goddamn shame that a well-holding original piece of filmmaking has to lose this many screens for a whole bunch of turds nobody cares about.

Really really solid for Good Boys. Everything else fell off a cliff, though. I very much doubt will see an Angry Birds 3, or another 47 Meters Down flick. deadline.com/2019/08/good-boys-hobbs-shaw-47-meters-down-uncaged-scary-stories-weekend-box-office-1202669605/THUMB RANK PIC DIS SCRS(CG) FRI SAT SUN 3-DAY TOTAL WK 1 Good Boys Uni 3,204 $8.3M $7.3M $5.3M $21M $21M 1 2 Hobbs & Shaw Uni 3,757 (-587) $3.8M $6M $4.2M $14.1M (-44%) $133.7M 3 3 Lion King Dis 3,560 (-660) $3.1M $5.1M $3.6M $11.9M (-41%) $496.1M 5 4 Angry Birds 2 Sony 3,869 $2.8M $4.4M $3.3M $10.5M $16.2M 1 5 Scary Stories… CBS/LG 3,135 $3M $4M $3M $10M (-52%) $40.2M 2 6 47 Meters 2 EST 2,853 $3.1M $3.3M $2.6M $9M $9M 1 7 Dora… Par 3,735 $2.2M $3.6M $2.7M $8.5M (-51%) $33.9M 2 8 Once..H’Wood Sony 2,504 (-1,003) $2.1M $3.2M $2.2M $7.6M (-35%) $114.3M 4 9 Blinded…Light NL/WB 2,307 $1.4M $1.7M $1.3M $4.45M $4.45M 1 10 Art…Rain Dis/Fox 2,765 $1.3M $1.8M $1.3M $4.4M (-46%) $16.9M 2 11 Where…Bernadette Ann/UAR 2,404 $1.2M $1.3M $918K $3.45M $3.45M 1
