Great start for Scary Stories. Eh at Dora, not that great as expected. Spent the day with some relatives, so the numbers are very very late tonight. Anyway, Aladdin's out of the top 10 after 12 weeks. Losing theaters finally hurt it. deadline.com/2019/08/dora-and-the-lost-city-of-gold-hobbs-shaw-the-kitchen-box-office-weekend-1202665153/THUMB RANK PIC DIS SCRS(CG) FRI SAT SUN 3-DAY TOTAL WK 1 Hobbs & Shaw Uni 4,344 (+91) $7.1M $10.5M $7.8M $25.4M (-58%) $108.5M 2 2 Scary Stories… CBS/LG 3,135 $8.8M $6.9M $5.1M $20.8M $20.8M 1 3 Lion King Dis 4,220 (-582) $5.7M $8.2M $6.1M $20M (-48%) $473.1M 4 4 Dora… Par 3,735 $6.5M $6M $4.4M $17M $17M 1 5 Once…H’Wood Sony 3,507 (-152) $3.2M $4.8M $3.5M $11.6M (-42%) $100.3M 3 6 Art…Rain Dis/Fox 2,765 $3M $3M $2.1M $8.1M $8.1M 1 7 The Kitchen NL/WB 2,745 $1.77M $2.2M $1.5M $5.5M $5.5M 1 8 Spidey..Home Sony 2,678 (-768) $1.4M $2.1M $1.7M $5.3M (-33%) $370.9M 6 9 Toy Story 4 Dis 2,295 (-930) $1.3M $1.8M $1.3M $4.4M (-40%) $419.6M 8 10 Bring The Soul Traf 878 $711K $990K $594K $2.3M $4.4M 1 11 The Farewell A24 704 (+295) $633K $880K $704K $2.2M (-8%) $10.3M 5 12 Brian Banks BST 1,240 $763K $804K $579K $2.1M $2.1M

Boo. Scary Stories was a great time that nearly washed the horrible taste of Hobbs & Shaw out of my mouth. Was really rooting for it to beat that insufferable piece of shit.

I wasn't really a fan of either movie, but I had more fun with Hobbs & Shaw. It was a dumb action movie but knew it for the most part. Scary Stories had some interesting bits, but I felt that the whole didn't work for me. I think it would have worked better as an anthology film instead of trying to combine the stories from the book with an original story that seemed like someone involved with the film wanted to use for another project that never got off the ground.

Those were pretty much my exact thoughts going into it, but once I saw what they did, I appreciated the decisions they made. The more I thought about it, the more I figured an anthology movie might have turned out underwhelming, particularly for people that grew up on the books, as those stories and illustrations have been etched in our memories for so long, doing them justice onscreen almost seems like a futile pursuit. The way they used the creatures in same way as the stories but within the context of the new characters I thought was very well done, especially the way they used the Pale Lady, who initially came from one of the more uneventful stories and ended up being the center of the movie's best scene. Not to mention, a lot of the stories in the books are just Schwartz's own take on old urban legends and myths, so the writers using the creatures for their own stories really just feels like keeping up tradition. I also didn't mind the story behind the book, as some of the details ("she hung herself with her own hair") would have felt right at home in one of the books. That was my takeaway anyway.
