I don't know whether you guys are following the news this side of the world or not but the tensions between India and Pakistan are now sky high after India revoked the special status for Kashmir a few days ago and annexed it under the government of India by scrapping Article 370 of the constitution.
Before doing that the Indian government sent over an additional 30k troops to the Kashmir valley to the already stationed 700k troops as a preventive measure to avoid any riots. The govt. also house arrested the local leaders and blocked all forms of communication (mobile, internet and cable) and issued curfew over there which is still undergoing.
This is the map of Jammu & Kashmir region that is shared by India, Pakistan and China.
The issue was started in 1947 during the partition of India. The people of Kashmir didn't want to join neither India nor Pakistan and wanted an independent country. The King of said region annexed it into India which was the starting point of the crisis. To help the people there then PM of India introduced the Article 370, giving special status to Jammu & Kashmir. From then India and Pakistan have fought wars over this region. Pakistan occupied some part of Kashmir and later gave some part of it to China. India holds the other part. There exists a line of control (LoC) which acts as border between these two nations (India and Pak).
After 70 years, the Indian govt. ruled the BJP party headed by Prime Minister Modi decided to revoke the autonomous status of Jammu & Kashmir by revoking the Article 370 of constitution. People of India and residents of Jammu and Ladakh are happy with this and I'm okay with it too although i don't the like way they did (which is altogether a different discussion). People of Kashmir (a Muslim majority region) will mostly oppose this and possibly riots will happen which is why the preventive measures. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah told in his speech in Lok Sabha the other day that they won't stop till they take Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) too.
All of this caused an uproar from Pakistan govt. and said they're willing to go to any extent to help Kashmir. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan even hinted at war if the world doesn't step into the matter. Today Pakistan decided to suspend trade with India and expel the Indian envoy and downgrade bilateral arrangements. The situation has become bad.
Meanwhile there's no info on what the Kashmiris are thinking about all of this. Poor guys have been under military lock down for days.
Will have to see how India responds to this.
I don't think this will end up in war but there's a minute chance if things go from bad to worse. To remind you the two nations are nuclear powered.
