To me these two are the greatest film actresses of all time. I'd never say anything like that for a male actor who usually I just keep to generation/country and it doesn't seem like we've done this before.
So who you got in the battle of King Kong vs. Godzilla?
The number 1 (Streep) vs. number 3 (Huppert) in your GOAT poll people - the Queen of Ice vs. The Queen of Fire.......or if you're being mean ..........the TWO queens of ice - you sarcastic b*stards.

Both are supremely overrated, but if I had to choose one? Huppert.

I do love Huppert from what I've seen so far she isn't nearly as versatile. Streep is in her own league.

Huppert. No contest. Streep is not that good. I mean she's good in that she's better than people like Hathaway and Kate Hudson, but that's not exactly.... adulation. For the amount of nominations she has, only 1/4 of those I can see why she was nominated. Only a pair of those are elite performances. Sophie's Choice, and some. I'd say Streep trails titans like Mirren and Huppert and Swinton. And I know she had a better career post-80s than her fellow peer in the 80s Jessica Lange, but Lange's highs were too dominant. And while I know Jess fizzed out in the 90s and 00s which is why some people don't know her all that well anymore..... she did make a few career resurrections on television (though underseen) that's better than anything Streep did in the last 30 years. Streep is paradoxically overrated, while still being a true all-time great actress and one of the best to do it. Anyone would be overrated with the ridiculous amount of Oscar nominations thrown at her like confetti. Jesus would be overrated. It's not entirely her fault though. It's not like she asked the Academy to lose all their senses when they see her name on a ballot and just put a tick next to it.... no matter what.I used to feel similarly about Streep to you, but I've mellowed. She's not levels above even some of her contemporaries ( Glenn Close is at least her equal in ability, if not opportunity) but I have to consider her one of the very best.

She's not levels above even some of her contemporaries ( Glenn Close is at least her equal in ability, if not opportunity) but I have to consider her one of the very best. I just don't personally feel she's one of the very best. I think Sophie's Choice is her only elite performance. She has lots of other good stuff no doubt, but...she just doesn't have the feel of an all-time great to me. Most of her stuff has a basic feel to it. It's not because she's so ridiculously overlauded and I feel the need to level her in proportion to her nominations or anything. Though with Sophie's Choice you can argue she definitely has the major thespian ability. I think one more elite performance would propel her to being in the conversation for being one of the best. But as of now, I live in a world where I could see Mirren, Huppert, Lange, but not Streep. And personally speaking, I have more love for Adams than Streep and I don't feel there's too much separating them objectively except for maybe a bigger filmography from Streep. Well I'm not passionate enough about Streep to tell you that you are wrong to feel this way. She's a very technical performer and doesn't neccesarily hit you in the gut like some of the other actresses you mention. My admiration of Streep is more on an intellectual level than an emotional one. Her technical range is objectively huge, even though that's not everything. But it's admirable for an actor, and not every actor has it. I'd probably agree with you that she hasn't got as many great peaks as her reputation might suggest, but her consistency going on 40 years in the film business is not easy to maintain. A lot of people in her position would be burnt out. Maybe there are others greater, but she's a model professional.

Huppert is a lot more consistent but Streep has higher highs.
I’d go with Huppert.

I think Huppert in The Piano Teacher eclipses Streep and nearly everyone else in everything, but I think Huppert does the ice queen shtick in so much stuff that I don't really understand her reputation outside of The Piano Teacher. Perhaps I need to see more of her work, but when I watch La Ceremonie and this and that, I need some evidence that she has something nearly as pungent as The Piano Teacher.

I think those 2 are the most similar counterparts. Where I think Ingrid Bergman is similar to Nicole Kidman........ Streep and Huppert mirror off each other. Both were anointed early at around the same time, and built various stages to their career.
Huppert is the better actress. Once I think about it, I can get more into it like that Swinton vs Blanchett piece. But as of now, I'll just say that.......
Huppert beats Streep in the 70s, 90s, 00s, and 10s. And Huppert is especially better in the 70s and post-2002 where Streep started her slide. Streep imo, only has 3 great performances. Could've been more, if ya know, she didn't become a totally unrecognizable actress after Adaptation. I saw very little of the shades of the old Streep after 2002.

There is no more overrated performer, male or female, on the face of the acting planet than Meryl Streep. She is talented for sure, but I think that her best work plays to a naturalism and grounded sensibility that she has all but abandoned in the face of impersonation and mimicry. Rarely do I ever see her embody a human being. Instead, it's like watching a very lifelike robot going through the motions of humanity, but not actually having that spark. Every so often she reverts back to her roots and can give a great performance, but for a woman with twenty-odd Oscar nominations, I think she's only been worthy of maybe four or five in the course of her long, long career, and her best work is and will probably always be Angels in America, where a gifted director finally made great use of her and gave her material that supported her theatrical tendencies.
I find Huppert far more watchable and I enjoy her in general, but I also think her reputation is a tad overblown. Her issue is that I find her a very cold, clinical performer, and while her performances are precise, they feel very technical and lack any sort of spontaneity. This sensibility works much more in her favor than it does Streep because of the roles she tends to take, but Huppert's someone I respect more than I can say I love. Still, she takes this in a landslide.

Like I always say .......my name should be huppertyes I consider her the greatest actress ever, period outside of era or language which I can't say about any male........I consider Streep 2nd. In our GOAT poll Streep won, Huppert 3rd...... The only difference between them tbh is Huppert can be fearless more and French film is not as genre based as American film which hems Streep in somewhat. They will always be linked to people who know what's up......the same way Brando/Clift.......DePac ......Davis/Hepburn are .....it's a great acting matchup. Everybody else kiss the ring (btw I am pretty sure this poll was done once iirc, but no worries......can't do too much ammirite?)
