Well Morrissey is scum but The Smiths were one of my high school bands and it’s hard to deny their greatness and that of The Queen is Dead in particular — it placed well within my own top ten so I’m happy to see it here.

I don't think any Smiths album comes close to this one - though their great singles do.
It's funny and sad and the guitar playing and vocals are perfectly balanced - it's a Smiths album in the sense that it seems like Morrissey/Marr authentically not Morrissey singing over Marr like he sometimes did or dominating wrong.
Maybe 1986's best record.......Keats and Yeats are on your side ........but Wilde is on mine.......that's lovely stuff.

#3: The Queen is Dead - The Smiths Genuinely sad, funny, absurdly melodramatic, earnest (even in sarcasm), memorable in every way, beautifully constructed - fantastic album.

My favorite Replacements album (and the only one that made my ballot, *ducks*) so I'm glad that it was the highest ... I do like them quite a lot but I'm glad their major three weren't the top three as I sort of suspected and we wound up with something with a bit more variety. But yeah, Let it Be is great shit from front to back, so I can't complain.

Let It Be will always be my favorite album of all time. No album sums up the contradictions in Rock and Roll like it - bad vibes, bad jokes, great jokes, great vibes, all side by side - rarely if ever has rock music been this funny or this unrestrained.
They are arguably the greatest American band ever - the Dolls and Ramones and Husker Du give them a run - and Let It Be was them at their absolute peak.

Seems like no. 1 has got to be Prince. Rock is about covered. Unless it's a Public Enemy record or something but that would be a surprise.
Edit- Stone Roses. Pacinoyes is probably right.

Fun presentation Joaquim, thanks for putting this together. Definitely need more voters next time - isn't this supposed to be a forum of list addicts? WHERE IS EVERYONE

If Pleased to Meet Me hadn't lost that tiebreaker, The Replacements would've been the first artist to get 3 albums in the Top 5 in one decade. Poor guys were on the wrong end of 2 separate tiebreakers.

Fuuuuck yesssss ... and I was the #1 btw ... didn't expect it to actually finish on top but I'm thrilled that it did, now two for three that my favorite has come out on top which is almost strange. It's a brilliant, legendary album, a rare one that I can listen to over and over and never tire of. It's very much my shit, the standout of the decade for sure, and that says a lot because this is a great decade for music once you dig past the mainstream garbage...

The thing that made the Stone Roses great on this debut and the sibles before and after was that they were hippies who were punk Rock - they often sing if love but only for the people they love.
They were narcissists (I AM The Resurrection, I Wanna Be Adored)
They wrote songs about murdering the Queen
Like The Replacements - the best Rock and Roll is about contradictions - and they epitomized it on this classic record like The Replacements........and Rolling Stones......and Velvet Underground..........they can be mentioned in that rare company.

I like The Stone Roses but I think this is a little high. There are like four really good songs (I Wanna Be Adored, I Am the Resurrection, Fool's Gold, Made of Stone) and the rest is solid. Squire is an excellent and underrated guitarist and Brown had that cocky Lennon-esq snarl that is always great for a rock singer, so even their filler sounded good. Only one person had it at 1, so I think it was more of it making a ton of top tens.

Also thank you to Joaquim for running this. It must be a pain in the ass. I think the votes will come in quicker for the 90's like the 60's/70's because there's a better organized canon of classic albums there. Also, it seems like there was more activity this time because we did the thread at night EST. I know at least I was able to post live while in the past we did it in the day so I couldn't.

Great job Joaq - thanks for doing this. I'll say this for this board - you picked Pacino as best actor, the Stones won the 70s poll, the Replacements placed 5 (!) albums on this list and 3 in the top 6. If you'll excuse me.......I have something in my eye........

Highest ranking: #1 on 4 ballots Damn, wonder what beat this? The other 2 ballots had it ranked much lower. 100 of its points came from those 4 #1 placements. Meanwhile, Stone Roses had 1 ballot place at #13 and another at #25 while the rest were all Top 6 placements.
