Phantom Thread PS Cmon! Dunkirk isn't winning. Screenshot it. FUCKING SCREENSHOT THIS FUCKING COMMENT. DUNKIRK ISNT WINNING NOLAN FANBOTS TAKE THAT KICK IN THE FUCKIN NUTS!!! PTA is not winning for a likely late screener and December release about DDL as a fashion designer in a sexual relationship with young model-- especially when Focus already has prime Oscar bait with Darkest Hour Where did that plot detail come from?

The script and people close to the project and PTA its been reported on AW Cool. What else ya got? Could be false, but it seems legit: DDL plays a pretty misogynist fashion designer who meets a young model, falls in love, and she hooks him onto drugs and they develop some sort of master-slave relationship, with him as the submissive.

Idk, it seemed like last year there were more obvious choices like Silence and Loving even if they ended up doing worse than we expected. Seems pretty open this year. I'll say Bigelow's Detroit movie for now. At least they got nominated for something, I think the biggest surprise and bust last year was Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, imo. I know that Lee can be hit and miss at times, but I didn't expect BLLHW to be that much of a miss. Maybe this means great things for his next film though. Plus, it's about boxing, and you can't go wrong getting behind a boxing film for Best Picture. I should know since my prediction for Bleed for This last year was a great call.

Sounds cool. Looks like TWBB and The Master's fashionable lovechild, if that makes sense. It could go either way.

Doubt it Read the script, its extremely straightforward middlebrow bait he's been making for years Streep and Hanks got good roles and its relevant but its a smaller Bridge of Spies, and it'll be arriving very late

Hard to say at this stage.
Dunkirk can make an appearance but I feel its release will be too early.
I pick The Greatest Showman mostly because of its nature, cast and release.
But then again no one would have picked or considered Moonlight this time last year. (or even know much of) and even La La Land wasnt taken that seriously.

Still a long time to go as a new year is just starting, so participation will probably be less enthusiastic and more unstable these first few months. At the same time though, given the wide range of possibilities, anything can happen and these are also the best months to call stuff nobody else does (looking at you, lone voters). In any case, things will undoubtedly change, and already have just these past few days, with Spielberg's The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara being delayed and The Post suddenly taking its place to be released during the upcoming awards season. Voters weren't really (i.e. not at all) shaken by this, seeing as a majority is leaning towards two earlier release dates: Dunkirk and Untitled Detroit Project. Both seem ambitious and baity enough, but they also have two main things going against them: genre bias in Nolan's case and having won before in Bigelow's. Having said that, all recent BP winners have come out before December and have premiered in a fall festival, so that could also go against some films which are next in line for now, especially PTA's working title Phantom Thread, Payne's Downsizing or Haynes' Wonderstruck. November release Darkest Hour seems like a safer bet, even though most eyes are on Oldman's performance. All in all, the Academy has also moved past more conventional films and towards independent underdogs, which could favor Sundance hit Call Me By Your Name... unless the overdue factor tips the balance this year, which could affect a good number of these presumed frontrunners. Adding MAredux' and OB's votes, this is what we have so far. Feel free to guess how many will actually be BP nominated.
1. Dunkirk - 14 votes (19%) 2. Untitled Detroit Project - 11 votes (15%) 3. Phantom Thread - 10 votes (14%) 4. Call Me By Your Name - 6 votes (8%) 4. Downsizing - 6 votes (8%) 4. Wonderstruck - 6 votes (8%) 7. Darkest Hour - 5 votes (7%) 8. Mudbound - 4 votes (6%) 9. The Greatest Showman - 2 votes (3%) 9. Molly's Game - 2 votes (3%) 11. The Beguiled - 1 vote (1%) 11. The Big Sick - 1 vote (1%) 11. Inner City - 1 vote (1%) 11. The Lost City of Z - 1 vote (1%) 11. Mother! - 1 vote (1%) 11. Suburbicon - 1 vote (1%)
Total: 72 votes

First 7 and Mother! will be the nominees, from what there are so far. Could see Wonderstruck and CMBYN getting lost in the mix tho, to the more recent emerging contenders.

A person has the full right to guess. Bigelow and PTA are the only ones I'm completely sure about for some reason tho lol. Maybe Downsizing and Wonderstruck, if Payne's plays his BD Oscar-less shtick and Haynes' plays his Carol snub shtick, and Michelle doing her overdue one could def not hurt for the film. I could say now that Dunkirk won't be doing as well as people are thinking tho.
