Can't say I'm happy as I never was a fan of the comic book/ superhero movies but that was for sure expected to happen. Didn't happen with Infinity War, it'd happen with Endgame.
Oh, well.

No one actually expected Endgame to get anywhere near Avatar before release. After all, both The Force Awakens and Infinity War, while being huge hits, failed to even top Titanic, so predictions were at around $2.1-2.2 billion level, with max being $2.5 billion and some going lower than $2 billion. It was only after the out-of-the-world worldwide opening weekend numbers that it got a real shot at topping Avatar. Even then, the chances got low before the re-release/expansion (though it would've comfortably outgrossed - and did outgross - Avatar's first-run numbers had Disney not have gone ahead with expansion).

Box office numbers isn't exactly my thing so maybe you're right. But after the opening weekend of Endgame I think it was certain it was going to overtop Avatar. And when they decided a re-release (a cheap trick on their behalf, imo), it was just a matter of time.

Congrats to Marvel. Definitely an impressive feat. Avatar had a great run.

Even though I don't like Avatar, I'd rather the highest grossing movie be an original IP than the 22nd installment in a franchise.

I wonder if James Cameron will re release Avatar in IMAX before the release of Avatar 2? That would be kinda funny

Avatar to now re-release with unfinished footage and a mid-credits roll!

I personally think re-releases shouldn't count, but whatever. To be fair, at the rate it was originally going, Endgame would've still beaten Avatar without the re-release numbers. It would've finished at $2.762 billion compared to around $2.756 billion Avatar made.

Perhaps, but a full-scale re-release like what they did feels like they did it solely to secure the top spot, and I find that a bit dishonest. But then, I have no real skin in the game, because box office =/= quality. With that said, I hate Avatar and actually quite like Endgame, so it is what it is.

May be but re-releases happen all the time. Avatar had it. Titanic wouldn't have crossed $2 billion without re-releases.

I don't care for Avatar at all, and while Endgame was better, it was merely decent. Of the two, I would much rather Avatar be the top of the pile, as at least it was an original and out of nowhere phenomenon, whereas Endgame is a culmination of a 20 film series, that stopped seeming original quite some time ago. Still, we all know Gone with the Wind is the real king.

In my country,
La vita è bella Quo vado? (not Quo Vadis) Titanic
Avatar is #6 and endgame has half the audience of titanic.
