Tron: Legacy, which is better than Tron in literally every aspect. Visually, musically, story-wise, performances.
Blade Runner 2049 is also clearly a better film than Blade Runner 1 (at least I just mean the theatrical cut). The only thing the original had over it was Rutger Hauer.

Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls is far more inventive and funnier than the first, so much better I'd say that it makes the first pretty much obsolete.

Die Hard 2 is actually fucking incredible. I think I've seen it more than the first movie. It never got the credit it deserved, imho.

I actually think Die Hard with a Vengeance is the best of the lot. Really stands on its own and holds up so well. I like DHWAV, but the first two feel more like pure Die Hard films. Die Hard is just about Bruce Willis being Homer Simpson as a Cop. It's not Lethal Weapon, which is what DHWAV hewed closer to. Sam Jackson is great, but he unbalances everything. He's just as charismatic as Bruce Willis, if not more charismatic, so the magic of the first two, where it's truly the Bruce Willis show, is gone.

Beyond Thunderdome is the best Mad Max of the original trilogy.
The first movie is a mediocre Dirty Harry vigilante cop movie with some neat touches. The second is a western "man with no name shows up in town and helps people begrudgingly" movie, but with car chases and sick action sequences.
The third makes Max into a more complex man. He's a drifter who looks out for himself and is willing to assassinate people if the price is right. He's a good man who won't kill the innocent. He's someone who respects Auntie Entity for what she has achieved and what she does for her people. He's a man who rejects Auntie Entity's extreme viewpoints. He's a curmudgeon who doesn't like kids. He's a father who will stick his neck on the line for their freedom.
And come on, the Thunderdome sequence is the best action piece of the original trilogy.

I actually think neither of the Ace Ventura films are funny.

I'll second TRON: Legacy. Such a great cinematic experience featuring awesome visuals & a BOOMING soundtrack by Daft Punk.

Toy Story 2 is the best film in the series. Do not agree, it is my second favorite behind the original, but I get sick of people saying it's the worst or even that it's mediocre or bad.

I haven’t seen either in a really long time but as a child I much preferred Ghostbusters 2.

Magnum Force absolutely wipes the fucking floor with Dirty Harry. Just joking At least you didn't say The Enforcer, which features the worst acted death scene of all time.

You can actually argue that Magnum Force is better than Dirty Harry.
Not that I don't like Dirty Harry.... it's a great film, but I just think the sequel is better. And I like Sudden Impact nearly as much as either, although it's not on par as a film with the first two entries of the franchise which in my opinion are definitely the two stand outs.

- It goes without saying that The Exorcist III is an improvement over the second, but I also consider it to be better than the first.
- Last Crusade is the best of the Indiana Jones series, though two of them are awful.
- New Nightmare is the best of the Freddy series.

- New Nightmare is the best of the Freddy series. A Nightmare on Elm Street is just invincible.

i think both of cameron's sequels are better than their perhaps more lean and artsy originals but that tends to be up in the air rather than consensus
zombie's second Halloween movie absolutely shits on his first one
while the general consensus is that Retribution is the best Resident Evil flick i would still give that honor to The Final Chapter

Diana was a worthy follow up to Downfall in Hirschbiegel's Human Monsters trilogy.
In all cerealness, I think Karate Kid II is awesome. I don't know that it's outright better than the first film, but it's for sure right there with it. What a god damn score it has! I recall loving The Jewel of the Nile a whole heap too, though I haven't watched either movie in forever. Those are the only ones coming to mind for me right now that haven't been mentioned yet...

X-Men the Last Stand is a bit of a dumpster fire but also the only X-Men film to ever try to own all the thematic implications of such a situation.
Stolen Kisses is more energetic, funnier and more hard hitting than The 400 Blows. It's a madcap comedy but it also nails the anxiety of the Antoine better than the first one. I don't get why The 400 Blows is the one everyone looks to.

Superman 2 - flawless piece of cinema for its time and beyond, then comes Superman II which was bigger, badder, campier in a beautiful way that enhanced the experience we were treated to with the first film.
Aliens - the second continued the continuity and character growth of the first almost flawlessly, something that was rather rare for sci-fi/horror genres at the time. You could make a strong case for both movies simply being halves of a unified whole.
Christmas Vacation - is a bona fide holiday classic that really zeroes in on the joys/horrors of being with your family at Christmas. The ensemble here works extremely well.
Evil Dead 2 - is where Raimi struck his pitch-perfect balance between horror/comedy and established his singular directorial voice.
Death wish 2 - has a very strange concatenation of qualities. It can come dangerously close to running off the rails altogether, but overall, I think it's a more successful film than the first Death Wish.
Friday the 13th 2 - it was Part 2 that saw it fully unleashed Jason and cemented the template that would come to define the series. Don’t get me wrong, thee original is a classic, but Part 2 birthed a horror icon.
