Yeah, I really don't see this going anywhere at the Oscars. Still should be a nice little hit for Damon though.

Yeah, I don't see this as having the juice to sustain all season long, but it's cool that it doesn't seem like the rolling dumpster-fire the rumor mill touted it as being. Still can't say I'm overly interested in it based off the trailer and the premise, but I'll still check it out.

I think this goes nowhere at the Oscars. The release is too early, Damon has already been nominated somewhat recently and he'd be the movie's only shot anyways. That wasn't the case for The Martian. Don't see his performance being so staggeringly great that it rises above the blatant limitations of mixed to slightly positive reviews and a July release. Don't think he'll even be in the top 10.
Glad to see the movie looks decent at least. Looking forward to checking it out. And I like Damon so who knows, maybe he gets a coveted Tommen Award nom next season.

Yeah, it starts off at 54/100 on Metacritic. I think it could end up in the 60s when all is said and done. Damon will probably have a better shot with The Last Duel, which I have my reservations about but it'll still attract more buzz.

Starts with a 54 at Metacritic. Yeah I just think this opened way too early plus will have too much competition for Damon to be remembered at all by the end of the year. At A_W, a great point, imo, was made that it’s like Damon’s The Way Back where he gets a lot of praise but he’s in a by the numbers movie with an early release. I thought it was possible Affleck might win NBR because of WB’s close ties with them, not that I expected him to be able to get traction beyond that, but he was pretty much forgotten about by critics even with last year being less crowded. I know stephen is one of the few here that believes in The Last Duel, I don’t know if Damon will get any awards traction from that either as I expect Comer and Driver may get too much of the attention, but if the movie does well, it’s certainly possible he might get some degree of awards traction. I keep seeing tweets about a trailer coming in July, but all of it or most of it is probably wishful thinking by Driver and Comer fans. I’ve found that Comer fans might actually rival how crazy some of Driver’s fans can be. Edit: Looks like Good God and I were thinking the same thing. Jinx!

83% on Rotten Tomatoes though (so far. Could get worse, could get better). www.rottentomatoes.com/m/stillwater_2020Wouldn't write this off yet as a potential Best Actor vehicle for Damon. It looks tailor made for middle of the road awards voters.

Best Actor is looking stacked as hell as it is.

But yeah, a release this early and an OK, but not ecstatic critical response obviously won't help his cause.

I think the best thing that could come from Stillwater is if The Last Duel is good, all of a sudden, Damon has a banner year.

I know you're a Damon fan, but this year's Best Actor race is already going to be crowded with A-list talent and it's not like this is going to have the commercial appeal of something like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to stick around. At best, the comparable here would probably be Affleck in The Way Back. He's more respected than Affleck as an actor, but there's probably far less incentive to give him a fourth acting nomination that he has no chance of winning for than to give Affleck a first. DiCaprio, Driver, and Bale are approaching levels of respect where they're going to be contenders for every prestige role they have for the rest of their careers. Cooper is on a hot streak. And I'd argue Will Smith will certainly have a better narrative than Damon with not having been nominated in 15 years and his autobiography set to be released this fall (clearly an intentional choice). I doubt he even ends up in the top 10. Maybe it helps him for The Last Duel, but I don't think he has the kind of role in that gets nominated anymore.

House of Gucci teaser trailer beats it out FTW - there's no way I'm going to be out-crazied by Comer fans.........Pfffffffffft

All this is probably true, but I've also already agreed with stephen assessment that Damon is a big longshot here because the film reviews are not undeniable and the release date is too early😉. I do think he'd be a very solid contender if this was a November release though, as Stephen pointed out. It just looks like something Academy meat eaters would give a watch in the heat of the season, and Damon is respected.

Not to mention, Focus is releasing Belfast in November and they clearly see it as their main Oscar film.

The 54 MC doesn’t even include pans from Telegraph and Playlist. I doubt it’s going anywhere and that RT score will surely drop. The movie is a mess and Focus moved it to summer because it’s not good enough to make an awards play.
I’m a pretty big Damon fan and he is good here, but there’s no need to be delusional about this lol. This isn’t going to happen but I’m predicting Ridley Scott to put him on the awards radar again this year!

This isn’t going to happen but I’m predicting Ridley Scott to put him on the awards radar again this year! Yeah, I wouldn't be putting money on Ridley Scott in a historical epic. Gladiator was almost lightning in a bottle for him. None of his historical epics since really seem to work out, especially when it comes to awards. Kingdom Of Heaven, Robin Hood, Exodus: Gods And Kings....they were all big misses for him. They all look good in terms of costumes and production design, but don't really come together as great movies. He keeps trying to recapture the magic of Gladiator and failing. And as much as I like and rate Matt Damon, there is something about his look and essential "Americaness" that doesn't make him feel like ideal casting for The Last Duel. And Ben Affleck as well.... ! If it turns out to be amazing and loaded with Oscar worthy performances, I'll be the first to applaud. But Scott peaked long ago in this genre and has run out of ideas. Damon will probably sit this awards season out.

Yeah, Focus's two main priorities this awards season will be Last Night in Soho and Belfast, both of which will premiere at TIFF.
