I believe it's too love-or-hate, but I love Ali Wong's specials on Netflix. Dark, loud and hilarious. I find her unbearably unfunny.

Not a tv special but I saw Anthony Jeselnik live this past weekend at the Chicago Theater. Truly hilarious stuff.

Dave Chappelle - The Dreamer (2023)Trans jokes, bi jokes, white jokes, black jokes, homeless jokes, Chris Rock / Will Smith jokes, Asian jokes, disabled jokes, Little Nas X gay jokes, stripper jokes I don't expect anybody on MAR to care because the only person who cracks jokes around here regularly is, um......me ......... but if you hated his last couple, you'll hate this one too I'm sure ......... and if you think he's still funny and would still like to have a beer with him.......well........he's still funny to me........still verrrrrrrrry mellow (or incredibly lazy depending on your POV.......)

Ricky Gervais - Armageddon (2023)Extremely funny, mocking of Woke culture and that's not me using the word unironically but him using it that way (until the end when he uses the "words have changed" ratonale to be nice) Covers a lot of stuff and less on brand than Chappelle but in many ways both more offensive and less because Chappelle is so effortless where Gervais is more hard working..............but Gervais has a higher joke / laugh ratio even if he can miss - ...............and sometimes he misses on purpose tbh The last 20 minutes are some inspired stuff when he gets to "does a dog die in it?" questions and people not wanting to be upset.......and why that is a counter-human idea - a safe space impulse to be avoided by common sense Quite masterful stuff actually.......the last 20 minutes are like a Gervais highlight reel tbh

Gervais Armageddon was funny (he's on some kinda roll with this and SuperNature in consecutive years). Puts to shame the new dudes who also had Netflix specials in 2023 - Mark Normand, Stavros, etc who I like enough but not their hour of tepid material.
Joins my top two favs of the year... the Louis CK (both Back at the Garden/Live at the Dolby - mostly same material) and the Shane Gillis .
