David Fincher sets his first feature at Netflix as he is teaming with Gary Oldman on the biopic MANK, with Oldman playing iconic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz. Film is based on a script by Fincher's late father Jack
Specific plot details are vague, but sources say the story will follow Mankiewicz’s tumultuous development of the script for “Citizen Kane” — which would go on to be considered one of the best films of all time — alongside director Orson Welles. Despite the film’s critical success, the script was the only part of the film to win an Oscar.
The film will also be shot in black and white.
Fincher will produce alongside producing partner Cean Chaffin and Douglas Urbanski.

A biopic - not his usual genre fare. Fincher's Oscar?

Very interesting!
Fincher/Oldman sounds like an awesome pairing. Glad we're finally getting a new Fincher film...

This is pretty big for Oldman. When was the last time he played the lead role in a movie from a great director?

Film is based on a script by Fincher's late father Jack The film, titled “Mank,” is based on a script by Fincher’s late father, Jack, who had penned the script prior to his death in 2003. Specific plot details are vague, but sources say the story will follow Mankiewicz’s tumultuous development of the script for “Citizen Kane” — which would go on to be considered one of the best films of all time — alongside director Orson Welles. Fincher's Oscar? Sounds good. Expect it to be at least better than Trumbo, though Trumbo's life and career obviously seems far more cinematic than Mankiewicz's . Fincher is a great shooter who seems to have run out of things to say, so if this is a passion project because it's his father's script, then great. And a brilliant actor like Oldman not signing up to an unwatchable movie and working with a great director is always good news. The man doesn't do it enough. Looking forward to this pairing.

I mentioned Oldman as in the "actor/genre" thread where I listed him as the best (or most representative) for biopics - he never is off in biographies - it's his "thing" so I'd expect great things here tbh.

Yeah, this is the kind of movie that should be in the running for Emmys and not Oscars

Love it. Great period, Great part for Oldman as Mankiewicz.... which should cover his time in and then out of Hearst's inner circle, and then Hearst's outrage... so who to play Hearst? Well, he was 78 when Kane was released, and the look is close enough...... we shouldn't settle for anyone other than Pacino.....!! Who could play Welles is the tricky one...

Such great news to read! Been dying to know what Fincher's next film would be and this sounds interesting (plus his late father did the script so it'll be a passion project for him for sure) . Also , super pumped that the Finchmeister is making it in black & white!

I'm really glad Fincher will finally make another movie. At first glance I thought this seems a rather unusal project for him and a Herman Mankiewicz biopic doesn't sound to intruiguing to me. But then he did a pretty good job with The Social Network as well, which back then also didn't scream Fincher initially.
Would have been nice if this gets to the cinemas as well though...

I knew the Oscars prematurely awarded Gary Oldman (and Julianne Moore for that matter) with "the overdue" win, when I knew he had a worthier performance and film in him. This doesn't sound terribly interesting but in Fincher we trust. This will at least look glorious.

Very exciting news, I sense a career performance from Oldman here. Any thoughts on who could play Welles? Tom Burke? Too old?

At first, I thought "can't believe I waited all those years for his Gone Girl's follow-up to be a biopic". But then I remembered TSN and Zodiac are sort of biopics too, and Fincher directed the hell out of them. Could be more than telling someone's life and being the good old Fincher I love. Also, the fact that it was written by his dad means it should be very personal for him. I can't even wait for this.

I've been completely turned off by Oldman lately but Fincher directing might be enough for me to overcome that.

Yeah same as getclutch, Gary in another biopic sounds boring to me but Fincher being behind the camera is what keep me interested. Wait & see.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but has Oldman done so many biopics? Bored to google it but I'm not so sure.
For example, Hanks or Bale have been in so many of them...

Sid Vicious Joe Orton Ludwig Van Beethoven And not strictly a biopic, but he played Lee Harvey Oswald and Winston Churchill. Stretching the definition, count Dracula. movie-awards-redux.freeforums.net/thread/10726/gary-oldman-biopics

Oldman was great in Darkest Hour and he's going to be great here too. Definitely looking forward to this.

If we're stretching the definition, then you can add "Basquiat" where he plays a fictional version of Julian Schnabel. Of course, but the name of his character was Albert Milo, so a bit too stretched for a biopic imo.

Oh my god! I just remembered that Fincher and Oldman both share a baby mama and an ex-wife (Donya Fiorentino, the ex that claims Oldman was abusive). Pretty mental that two men who were both married to the same woman and both have kids with her are teaming up like this. They must both really dislike her.
