They can't be surprised. Hemsworth and Thompson sure as shit aren't Jones and Smith.

Bad number, but hardly surprising. Obviously this weekend was always going to be disappointing, but I wonder how much basketball hurt everything last night too. I went to see Shaft, and there was only 5 people in the theater, and the whole theater was basically a ghost town. I've never seen it so dead on a Thursday night with pretty big releases.

Basketball is probably part of it, but I can also imagine the new releases receiving rotten reviews isn't helping at all. From what I've heard about the new Shaft is that a lot of its humor seems unnecessarily out of date for example, similarly MIB International is getting dunked on. Every studio who isn't Disney seems to be struggling, and whether that's because of quality of lack of interest, I don't 100% know. Next weekend will be no different though, because the box office will finally light up if only because of Toy Story 4, after weeks of such bad numbers. It actually kinda depresses me, especially because it paints a bit of a grim future for theatrical releases.

It felt sort of like The Mule in that I wonder how much the bad reviews were due to it not being politically correct. I mean it's not a great film, but the score seems a little harsh because I do think it was pretty entertaining once Samuel L. Jackson enters the story. It also saddens me about how grim the future looks for theaters. I can understand because theaters are expensive plus a lot of it depends on the other theatergoers, and they can be awful. Like when I went to see Godzilla: King of the Monsters and The Dead Don't Die, someone's cell phone blinded me, and it wasn't just a one second thing, but people being rude and having them turned on for a few minutes. (I'm too meek to complain to anyone though. ) They can really make it great too though like nothing beats seeing a film with a crowd that's really into it.

Same, people are becoming more and more comfortable to the idea of watching just about everything at home, and while that is effective, there's nothing quite like seeing a movie in the cinemas. The theater experience is really second to none, and if it ever went away, I have no idea what I would even do.

I noticed the Men In Black showtimes at my theater are 1, 4, and 10:30, with the only 7 o'clock showing being in 3D which, needless to say, audiences don't give a fuck about anymore and are definitely not willing to pay the extra price for. Not that it needs any help to underperform, but someone did them dirty with that move.
Just checked the seating chart on Fandango out of curiosity and, sure enough, many movies are pretty booked up already for the evening shows and Men In Black's 7 o'clock is a fucking desert.

It would seem that no one gives a shit about Chris Hemsworth if he isn't playing Thor lol. I mean, just look at his track record of flops. Blackhat, Rush, Heart of the Sea, Ghostbusters etc etc. He should probably milk that Thor role for all its worth (whether he's fat or ripped)

It doesn't help that he seems to be cursed when it comes to picking good scripts. I think it's a combination of changing movie stardom, and the fact that Hemsworth is really a supporting actor, but he wants to be a big star, and just happened to break-out as Thor when The MCU was starting to get its foot out the door. He works best in ensemble piece, or movies where he's not the only center of attention such as Cabin in The Woods, or Battle At The El Royale.

Toy Story comes to save the Summer. We’re repeating 2010 again, it seems.
Speaking of Hemsworth, $45,000,000 dollars stands between Avengers and the all time record now.
