Hey - Adam Driver haters - how's it going to feel to watch him get great role after great role each year for the next 25 years?
Um
Great news - how about a Mann film with the Gucci Gang Driver and his uncle - Al Pacino - star of your 2 best movies Mike - as a cranky pit crew dude like that HACK Robert Duvall (j/k) in Days of Thunder?

Not a hater, more like a deep skeptic of his abilities. Do you think Driver’s beating out A-listers for stuff like this or Gucci or The Last Duel? Because it still feels like he’s accepting scraps as long as the director is legendary.

Well, I was just kind of joking in general because I know there's a lot of "doubters" of him - that would have been a better word........I would say the guy that is "most" like Driver in terms of age, interest in the theater (which matters a lot here - it's not incidental) and wants to be great in movies is a guy I doubt - a guy I'm a deep skeptic of his abilities - Jake Gyllenhaal - who I could have pictured taking a crack at Gucci or The Last Duel - not that he was up for them or anything......but Velvet Buzzsaw at least makes me think he has a little Gucci in him at least ........ I think Driver's upcoming slate is so stacked that you have to assume one of these is going to hit the jackpot and that will be at what - 4 or 5 Oscar nominations and a win when it does .......? It's hard to argue with that.......... Now he has to do it of course .........but it's not a bad move to work with these guys .......if he gets to 4 or 5 nods and a win, I can tell you the long term value of the work is definitely not hurt by working with auteurs ....... I mean no one is going to consider 2021 a "dud" year for him looking back........that's more a "on message boards for the short time being" thing .......

He's a solid enough actor, with a look that allows him to be castable in a wide range of projects, but he's been cast in so many things now, and I'm struggling to see why he's being cast in so much, because he rarely brings anything extraordinary to the table. I thought he was probably the least interesting performance in both The Last Duel and House Of Gucci. He got swallowed up by stronger castmates. He's dependably OK most of the time, but not some generational talent. To be fair, this kind of shit happens a lot when Hollywood is trying to put someone over. Remember when Jude Law or Clive Owen were being cast in everything to be the next big prestige stars. They had a couple of years when casting directors seemed to have them on speed dial, then it all slowed down a lot when people realised that while they were fine actors, they were never going to be superstar draws or "once in generation talents", so Hollywood moved on to the next thing. Actually, feels like the same thing happened with Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender. They are still around, but casting directors have found shiner new toys to try and put in everything once their shine wore off. I feel like Driver’s window is getting shorter, so he has to step up and show Hollywood that he's worth all this effort to put him in everything. Because right now, it ain't working.

So many Adam Driver haters on this forum 😑
Dude is one of the most talented, versatile and magnetic actors working today. Maybe some people are being sick of him because he's working too much? I remember Fassbender, Hardy and Gosling going through the same shit.

Big fan of Gosling though (for a long time now), and I very much like Fassbender.

But I gotta admit that I believe he did raise both The Lost Duel and House of Gucci through a solid presence where he didn't make me think about "oh I wish it was some he or they playing this role). I definitely found him very compelling at least on par with Damon, Affleck in that movie, and definitely more compelling and just a general all around great fit with his roles than I have felt Fassbender, and currently Bradley Cooper in say Nightmare Alley.

I remember Fassbender, Hardy and Gosling going through the same shit. I have to admit I can be guilty of that too, but unfortunately I do see it happening to just about every up and coming actor. And I’m sure the next “hot” actor will be cast in a lot of projects, and Driver will be just fine since he’s producing and also seems very focused on working with all the directors on his auteurs list.

futuretrunks has the right take. Chris Hemsworth has probably the best performance (I can think of) as a racecar driver.
I doubt the shirtless guy from girls can do better, but he has a great chance to with someone like Mann.... he NEEDS to score an Oscar nod with Mann's direction.

I wouldn't compare "just fine" actors like Jude Law and Clive Owen to Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender, same goes for Driver who has already collected at only 38 years old an array of filmmakers that can compete with the Leonardo DiCaprios and Tom Cruises of the world. Plus Fassbender is coming back this year in a huge way with David Fincher and Taika Waititi's movies.

Dude is one of the most talented, versatile and magnetic actors working today. Is he? I feel like he plays the same character in all his movies, though I'll admit I have not seen Paterson which is his best work according to many.

I quite liked Driver in Girls but have been less than impressed with him in films. I like him enough in some roles and think he can be pretty good, but also think he’s often miscast and bad. He of course has an insanely impressive filmography but I’m also unsure what all these filmmakers are seeing to continue giving him some of these roles. I don’t dislike him though so I hope he continues on a trajectory of proving me wrong. Just need more HoG over Marriage Story from him.

Mann was recently on Marc Maron's podcast, and seemed to suggest that the film takes place within a short time frame: link
