It happens with me all the time:
Arcade Fire: Neon Bible is better than Funeral Arctic Monkeys: Favourite Worst Nightmare is better than Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not Bad Religion: No Control is better than Suffer The Clash: Sandinista! is WAAAAAY better than London Calling Green Day: Insomniac is better than Dookie Nirvana: In Utero is better than Nevermind Pixies: Bossanova is better than Doolittle Queen: A Day at the Races is better than A Night at the Opera Radiohead: Kid A is better than OK Computer The Smiths: Strangeways, Here We Come is better than The Queen is Dead
Agree? Disagree? What are some of your examples?

Man, I got no thoughts here. I keep seeing the same old bands mentioned all the time on every forum. I really can't think of anything in direct response here.
Pixies suck. Radiohead for the most part sucks too. The Smiths are ok with a few good singles.
I think Queen is an anomaly. Don't hear people talk about them in terms of their albums generally. Their best songs reach terrific heights of epic power, no doubt about it - but then I never was interested in exploring their albums much.
Nirvana isn't bad but hard to enjoy - arguably better acts influenced them. But the glorious wave of 90s alternative does owe a lot to them no doubt. Need to listen to Arcade Fire again. I think I'll do it now - wasn't thrilled by them the first time around.

Good topic! I'm not sure I'd agree on all those but some I would dispute - Sandinista and Bossanova are "uh oh they jumped the shark albums!", Strangeways has basically none of the playfulness and breadth (and not much of the humor) that made Queen Is Dead so great. In Utero has like 3 great songs on it to me, the rest is a tuneless psychoanalysis session - Nevermind swung for the fences, In Utero is stuck in the dirt. I'd add these : Kinks - Arthur is better than Village Green Preservation Society both are great but Arthur holds together and VGPS runs out of gas at the end.
Spoon - Ga ga ga ga ga is better than Kill The Moonlight - They kept refining the sound and removing the fat. They got leaner and meaner.
Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette is better than Damned, Damned, Damned and almost anything else in UK punk too - MGE is everything that band ever had to say and no one else quite said it that same way either.
The Jam - Sound Affects is better than All Mod Cons - Sound Affects is just a perfect record - and diverse too socially/politically/romantically/culturally.
Husker Du - Flip Your Wig is better than Zen Arcade AND New Day Rising - all great but FYW is where the noise meets the pop - something like the musical formation of a Reese's Cup in it perfect balance.

Just a quick one- Amnesiac is Radioheads best album, but always gets over-shadowed by the two that came before it.

Another quick one- Yeezus is the only Kanye album I've ever thought was any good, but almost every Kanye fan I know seems to hate it.

White Album over Pepper I like Aladdin Sane better than Ziggy Stardust for Bowie Another quick one- Yeezus is the only Kanye album I've ever thought was any good, but almost every Kanye fan I know seems to hate it. I'm not really a hip-hop fan but that was probably why I liked Yeezus. It was more weird than anything else.

I'm not gonna say BETTER (like say....... Bossanova, as great as it is, ain't better than the total masterpiece that is Doolittle)... but I will say that I PREFER: Radio City over #1 Record (Big Star) The Libertines over Up the Bracket (The Libertines) Ooh La La over A Nod Is As Good As A Wink... To A Blind Horse (Faces) aaaaaaaaaaaaaand.... lately I've been replacing ( ) Lay it Down Clown with Nowhere is My Home on Tim....... and that homemade version gives Let it Be a little more of a run for its money... though I'm not gonna say I completely prefer it. (The Replacements)

Oh honey, I think for most of us here, we'd all agree that Legend of the Sun Virgin wasn't as strong as Xtabay, but that Mambo!, which was the fifth album would overshadow everything, for everyone, for all future generations to come: It's basically the soundtrack, not of a Generation... which is the mistake that most people make... but of a Century. I'm still undecided whether I want Bo Mambo or Goomba Bomba at my funeral... but I know, everyone will tut and roll their eyes and say, 'she's so unoriginal and should have gone with Beyonce'...

Nah, better is fine. Saying "I prefer Room on Fire to Is This It" is the same as saying "I think Room on Fire is a better album than Is This It". If you thought Is This It was a better album, you wouldn't prefer Room on Fire. There's no difference here, and trying to separate best and favorite just indicates an insecurity in one's taste. Unless there is a uniformly agreed upon scale for judging the objective quality of music that I'm not aware of.
