Finally got to this, and...was a bit disappointed. I liked it, more or less, but there were so many integral parts that didn't work for me that I can't say it comes anywhere close to season 1.
This season definitely lost the spark I felt for the show. I loved the fantasy/mystery tone of the first season (compared to the heavily sci-fi theme of this one). I loved the semi-limited cast and getting to know each of them pretty well. I feel like they over-extended this season, with El's unnecessary long-lost sister, Max, and Billy who, on the whole, added nothing for me. Maybe if Max was just added as a friend and not pigeonholed into a love interest and part of a stupid love triangle, ugh. Billy, idk, the actor is alright but still his storyline with Max just made the season less cohesive.
We got more Will and these rando new additions, but imo it was at the expense of characters like Jonathan, Mike, somewhat Lucas and Nancy. I also really did not like Nancy's character this season--she went from someone who took charge of her own path to someone that didn't seem to know what she wanted, led Steve on, used some third party to realize eh maybe she wants Jonathan? didn't clarify things with Steve afterwards either. I didn't like it. I wanted more Nancy/Jonathan/Steve bonding as a team, not this weird divisive residual love triangle that ended abruptly and unfairly. I had such a balanced, wholesome appreciation of everything in the last season, while as now, there are characters I definitely dislike (Jonathan, Nancy) and others I favor much more (Steve)...which isn't something I wanted.
I loved the world they set up last season, and I found that this time around, i wasn't attached to either the world they set up or the characters.
Joyce felt more well-rounded and Noni was 10x better, without having to yell/scream every other second lol. Bob, i grew to like as a character. he may be the only new addition I didn't mind. I also loved Steve's development but hate that it felt like it was at the expense of Nancy (and his relationship with her), and Jonathan (and a potential friendship amongst the two/three). Ugh.
Also, that finale was disappointing. Whoever here described the s1 finale as cathartic is spot on. I could have happily accepted it as a series finale and given the show a 10/10. This finale didn't meet that threshold; the payoff wasn't there, and the stupid 'cliffhanger' had no purpose or effect on me. The prom scene was cute but not quite the satisfying pay-off after a build up of tension...maybe for Will's character? Also ,that last moment: other than to tease out an [unnecessary] third season, the show could have done without that stupid scene.
One more positive thing lol, i do think they made up substantively in content to justify having a season 2. i remember finishing season 1 and saying k...i get why they'd want to continue and the basic premise they would rely on, but a whole other season...? but they earned having a full fledged season 2 and really worked on the details of the universe they created . I appreciate that, even if the end product felt more sci-fi than i ever wanted.

Totally agree about Max (and Billy) which just felt weird that she was a) accepted so fast and b) she was so willing... and the "sister". Really should have done without her especially when it literally led nowhere. My biggest qualm was the seemingly lessened role of Hopper (through the first half of the season at least) because him and his backstory was some of my favorite stuff from S1. But at the same time, they expanded on Steve a ton this season and I feel like the writers and the actor definitely nailed it there. Then there was Nancy and Jonathan, who were pretty bleh (I thought they were both meh is S1 too, so not much of a change here). It definitely didn't have the same effect that S1 did, but I still enjoyed myself.

I guess that was cool. I'm not sure what exactly I got to know about Stranger Things Season 3 from it, but it was a fun thing to watch.
Anyway, as someone who loves this show and preferred Season 2 a little over Season 1, I have high hopes for this.

Can’t wait for this. Looks very character-centric again which is a good sign. Hopefully the showrunners commit to some actual change in the dynamics of the show as promised, that could really make or break the season.

I’ve never binged an entire season of a show in one day before, but I’m 6 episodes in, and I’m really, really diggin’ it. But what’s with the more blatant than usual product placement? When Lucky Charms became important to the plot I chuckled a bit.

Happy to hear the good notices here.
I just hope it doesn't include those grunge/super teens from last season. That was easily the lowest point in the series.

I’m watching episode 8 right now (77 minutes, btw), and there’s no trace of them. Although, why establish the rest of El’s “siblings” if they weren’t gonna cover more of it? I guess that’s season 4’s problem?

That ending. What a gut punch.
I don’t know if I’d say it’s better than season 1 just yet, but both are better than season 2.

They’re all Deus Ex Machina’s, and Mohawk guy single-handedly beats the monsters before the ten minute mark, smiles, laughter, the end. Then the rest of the episode is the Netflix executives at a table meeting, bragging about how much profit they’re gonna make from this season. ... No. There’s no references to them whatsoever. Kinda highlights what a pointless inclusion they were.

The kids have gotten so big. I rewatched pilot episode and couldn't believe how big they are now. Does anyone know if season 4 will be the last season?

Just finished it. Excellent season. Way better than 2 and on par with 1. Everything from the writing to performances to visuals are spot on. I like it that folks were divided into little groups and each one had a task and finally unite at the big battle. Super engaging with an emotional ending. The whole season has a 'Red Dawn' vibe to it and there many callbacks to the 80s classics as usual. More of team work this time to beat the Mind Flayer than just Eleven and i appreciate that. Which also helped to add more characters to the roster and Robin is my new favorite character. It's a bummer that she is interested in women when Steve was showing signs that he likes her and they has great chemistry. There's a post credit scene which showed a Demogorgon in a Russian base in Russia but why Demogorgon again?

Season 3 is so much better than two that you wonder how could the same team screw up season two so badly. As for the post credit scene no clue but I'm hoping that American that is referred to is Hopper

But they’re open to a season 5. They should actually take a cue from IT and have it where season 4 is the last and let the kids age and then reboot it and have fight them when they are older... like college age.
